British architectural firm Scott Brownrigg has announced a significant jump in revenue, with turnover increasing by nearly one-third to $27.5 million for the year ending January 31, 2025, up from $21 million the previous year. The growth was primarily driven by a dramatic surge in international business, which generated $11 million in revenue compared to just under $2 million in the previous period.
The firm's geographic revenue breakdown shows the UK remained its largest market at $15.8 million, while other European countries contributed $540,000. This international expansion represents a strategic shift for the company, which has been actively pursuing projects across multiple continents as part of its long-term business plan.
Despite the revenue growth, Scott Brownrigg's pre-tax profits dropped by 50 percent to $1.5 million, down from $2.9 million in the previous year. The company's strategic board explained that increased expenses were primarily due to investments in new software and hardware, as well as significant one-time payments related to their membership in a mutual Professional Indemnity Insurance organization, stemming from industry-wide cladding claims impact.
The firm's international success has been anchored by several major projects, most notably the expansion of Saudi Arabia's Medina Airport, which recently completed its first phase. Scott Brownrigg also referenced another major confidential project in Saudi Arabia that has significantly contributed to its overseas revenue. The company's board emphasized that global fee income had risen substantially during 2023 and 2024, stating that "increasing our turnover from international work is a strategic move for us and aligned with our long-term business plan."
Beyond Saudi Arabia, Scott Brownrigg has secured projects across multiple countries. In Cyprus, the firm is working on The Island masterplan, which includes designing an international school. In Romania, they are involved with a new international airport in Bucharest that received government backing in September. The company has also taken on projects in Azerbaijan, including the mixed-use Sea Breeze resort masterplan in Baku, and is planning a similar resort project for Uzbekistan's Lake Charvak.
Closer to home, Scott Brownrigg has been involved in significant UK infrastructure projects. The practice developed rival plans for the upcoming Heathrow Airport expansion, dubbed "Heathrow West," which were considered more cost-effective and less disruptive than earlier proposals by Grimshaw. These designs, submitted in July by Arora Group, feature a shorter runway than the $14 billion Grimshaw plans. In late 2024, the firm achieved planning approval for Eastpoint Business Park, an 18,580 square meter life sciences campus in Oxford that will form part of the Oxford-Cambridge Arc.
The company has maintained operational stability while pursuing growth, with average technical headcount remaining relatively consistent at 138, down slightly from 140, while staff costs increased modestly to $11.3 million. During this period, Scott Brownrigg closed its Chiswick office, which it had purchased in 2018, fully integrating the Chiswick team into its Covent Garden Studio.
The firm also received substantial financial benefits from its research and development activities, securing a tax credit of more than $700,000 for R&D work. Looking ahead, the company acknowledged ongoing market pressures, with their report stating: "While the market pressure on fees driven by uncertainty may remain for some time, the company has been able to successfully navigate through market volatility through international geographical diversification and operational efficiencies during the year." The directors described the financial results as "outstanding" and attributed the success primarily to international outreach and improved operational efficiency.
