Actor Yoon Kye-sang takes on a captivating new role in ENA's latest comedy thriller series, "The Kidnapping Day." The show, based on the eponymous novel, made its debut to audiences on [premiere date], promising a unique blend of humor and suspense.
The 12-part series introduces viewers to Kim Myung-joon (played by Yoon), a former judoka who has been raising his ailing daughter alone since his wife, Seo Hye-eun (Kim Shin-rok), disappeared three years ago. However, when Seo reemerges in his life with a daring proposal to kidnap an 11-year-old child, Choi Ro-hee (Yuna), in order to secure funds for their daughter's medical bills, Kim Myung-joon finds himself embroiled in a complex web of events. The ill-fated kidnapping leads to his wrongful accusation of murder and a relentless pursuit by Detective Park Sang-yoon (Park Sung-hoon). To clear his name, Kim Myung-joon forms an unlikely alliance with Choi as they unravel the truth behind the murder mystery.
Directed by Park Yoo-young, known for his contributions to Netflix series such as "A Model Family" and "Love Alarm 2," and scripted by filmmaker Kim Je-young, director of the 2016 film "Cheese in the Trap," the series weaves a compelling narrative.
Yoon Kye-sang revealed his personal connection to the story, stating, "As I was reading 'The Kidnapping Day' script, I couldn't help but think about what I would do if my own daughter were sick. The script exudes warmth and ultimately delivers a heartwarming ending, which drew me to accept the role." This role diverges significantly from his previous sensitive portrayals, often cast as doctors or lawyers. Yoon embraced the opportunity to showcase his brighter, more comedic side.
Director Park Yoo-young explained that the TV adaptation would encompass a blend of genres, unlike the original novel, which predominantly focused on the murder mystery aspect. "The original novel leans heavily into the detective genre, primarily from Sang-yoon's perspective, for roughly the first third of the story. However, in adapting it into a 12-part series, the narrative shifts towards the chemistry between Myung-joon and Ro-hee," he explained. To enrich the storyline, the creators expanded the case and introduced additional characters, infusing elements of comedy, action, buddy dynamics, thriller, and drama into the series.
"The Kidnapping Day" carries a poignant message about family, reminding viewers of the profound meaning it holds. Yoon Kye-sang expressed his satisfaction with his role and praised his co-star, Yuna, saying, "I believed Myung-joon should possess an extraordinary strength as a former judoka. With the director's approval, I increased my weight to 78 kilograms. This project marked the first time I didn't have to undergo a diet regimen. It was an immensely gratifying experience."
As the series unfolds, "The Kidnapping Day" promises to captivate audiences with its blend of genres and a heartfelt exploration of family bonds. Don't miss it, airing every Wednesday and Thursday at 9 p.m.
