The Daesan Foundation announced on Tuesday that it has selected 15 translation projects across seven languages for this year's grants supporting the translation, research, and publication of Korean literary works. The program will provide 200 million won in funding to help introduce Korean literature to international audiences.
Launched in 2010, the foundation's initiative focuses on supporting translations and international publication of Korean literary works to expand their global reach. This year's selection encompasses a diverse range of languages, including four English-language projects, one French project, two German projects, two Spanish projects, two Japanese projects, three Chinese projects, and one Italian project.
The selected works span multiple genres, comprising two poetry collections, 12 novels, and one academic study. According to the foundation, judges prioritized translators' abilities above all other factors, while also carefully considering the literary value of the works and their potential success in overseas markets.
Among the works chosen for English translation are two notable poetry collections. "The Fantasy Shop by Future Mart" by Kang Eun-gyo, which won last year's prestigious Daesan Literary Award, will be made available to English-speaking readers. Additionally, "Worrying About Rabbits on a Winter Night" by Yoo Hee-kyoung has been selected for English translation.
The English translation projects also include two significant novels addressing contemporary social issues. "All About 247" by Kim Hee-sun is a dystopian work that explores a post-pandemic society shaped by the lasting effects of COVID-19. This novel has garnered particular attention and will be translated not only into English but also into German and Spanish, demonstrating its broad international appeal.
Another notable selection is "This Is Your Country" by Lee U, a novel set in an immigration detention center that examines themes related to immigration and displacement. The English translation will be handled by Paige Morris, who previously co-translated Han Kang's acclaimed work "We Do Not Part," bringing valuable experience to this important project.
The Daesan Foundation's annual grant program continues to serve as a crucial bridge between Korean literature and global readers, supporting the international recognition and appreciation of Korean literary voices across diverse genres and themes.
