With almost three decades of acting prowess behind him, Jung Woo-sung embarks on a nerve-wracking and exhilarating new chapter as he awaits critical reception for his directorial debut, "A Man of Reason," a film in which he also takes the lead role.
Speaking at a press conference held at CGV Yongsan in central Seoul, Jung expressed his disbelief at this momentous milestone, transitioning from a lead actor to occupying the director's chair. He shared his dedication to presenting a familiar tale in a fresh and unique manner, infusing thoughtful storytelling into "A Man of Reason."
At the core of the film lies Soo-hyuk, portrayed by Jung, a man who endured a decade in prison, shouldering the blame for his boss. Upon his release, he discovers the existence of a daughter, yearning for a chance at a normal life far from the clutches of the criminal world. Yet, his past resurfaces as his former boss hires a relentless assassin to pursue him. The talented ensemble cast includes Kim Nam-gil, Kim Jun-han, and Park Sung-woong in supporting roles.
Kim Nam-gil, who plays the assassin Woo-jin, expressed his privilege at working with Jung, an actor he admired and aspired to be like. Under Jung's directorial guidance, he sought to imbue Woo-jin with an unconventional essence, deviating from the archetypal hitman often depicted in cinema.
Park Sung-woong, whose rise to fame stemmed from crime film roles, including "New World" (2013), praised Jung's meticulous attention to detail and the physical transformation he underwent for his character, Eung-guk, the boss from whom Soo-hyuk strives to escape.
"A Man of Reason" garnered international attention even before its Korean release, having been invited to the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and screened at the esteemed Orivita section of the 55th Sitges Film Festival. However, Jung harbored a strong desire to present the film to the Korean audience, driven by a sense of longing and reservation during the wait for its domestic debut.
With pre-sales to 153 countries heightening anticipation for the film, the eyes of the world now turn to "A Man of Reason" as it finally opens in Korea on August 15. Jung Woo-sung's ambitious directorial endeavor promises to captivate audiences with its thrilling narrative and emotive performances, leaving an indelible mark on both the Korean and global cinematic landscape.
