Competing against ten other titles, including Grand Cross: Age of Titans, Tower of God: New World, and Seven Knight Idle Adventure, Lies of P stood out for its distinctive "soulslike" subgenre set in the late 19th century.
The Excellence Award was presented to the PC and console RPG Dave the Diver, while Best Game awards went to Night Crows, Goddess of Victory: Nikke, and Crossfire: Sierra Squad, spanning genres such as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) and first-person shooters.
The announcement preceded the opening of the 2023 G-Star gaming festival, organized by the Korea Association of Game Industry (K-Games). Culture Minister Yu In-chon attended the Korea Game Awards, expressing a commitment to providing "full support" to stimulate the game industry. This marks the first ministerial visit to the award ceremony in four years, with the minister highlighting the government's interest in the gaming industry ecosystem, following President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent mention of the "loot box" system. The ministry aims to garner government attention to propel the gaming market forward.
