IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment, has revealed that it is actively pursuing legal action against severe instances of online abuse and harassment directed at the artist. The agency provided a detailed update on November 11, covering the legal measures taken over the past two years (2023-2024) to protect IU from harmful online content.
EDAM has partnered with a law firm to address a range of malicious activities targeting IU. Among the reported offenses are defamation, slander, false accusations (including plagiarism claims), threats, privacy invasion, sexual harassment, distribution of obscene content, and the creation and dissemination of deepfake images. Only the most serious cases that meet criminal criteria have been pursued, reflecting the agency’s stringent approach to protecting IU's rights.
To date, over 180 individuals have been reported for their alleged involvement in these incidents. EDAM Entertainment confirmed that it continues to file additional complaints as new cases emerge, aiming to maintain IU’s safety and mental well-being by pursuing every instance of abusive behavior.
Among the outcomes of these legal actions, six individuals received fines, and three others were issued conditional suspensions contingent on completion of educational programs. Another individual was conditionally deferred with probationary oversight. One of the more prominent cases involved a netizen engaged in cyberbullying who received a fine of 3 million won ($2,500) due to the seriousness of their actions, which included defamation, harassment, and threats.
Some defendants, however, have challenged these rulings, and several cases are pending formal court trials. IU’s representatives indicated that certain individuals, particularly repeat offenders, have been escalated to trial, and EDAM has emphasized the gravity of these offenses as the cases proceed through the judicial system.
The agency also disclosed that it has identified certain perpetrators residing overseas. Notably, some of these individuals, implicated in a large wave of plagiarism accusations in April and May last year, have continued their harassment despite ongoing legal processes. One of the offenders is suspected to be a former middle school classmate of IU, highlighting the disturbing persistence of some abusers.
Efforts to track and identify overseas users have made progress, with EDAM requesting assistance from international organizations to trace offenders using foreign IP addresses or living abroad. The agency noted that investigations are advancing in several cases, underscoring the commitment to hold these individuals accountable despite geographical challenges.
One specific incident involving a baseless rumor accusing IU of espionage has concluded its initial investigation. However, the suspect has repeatedly refused to cooperate with law enforcement, causing delays. Currently, the individual has been transferred to the prosecution and awaits further legal proceedings.
EDAM emphasized its zero-tolerance policy, stating that it will not tolerate unlawful behavior against IU under any circumstances. The agency has warned that repeated offenses will lead to aggravated penalties, and thousands of documented defamatory comments and posts are being stored in a dedicated database for ongoing monitoring.
The agency also disclosed a list of online communities it is monitoring for harmful content. These platforms include Nate Pann, DC Inside, TheQoo, SoulDresser, Instiz, and several others known for frequent discussions about public figures.
In a concluding statement, EDAM urged malicious actors to cease their activities, noting the distress caused to both IU and her fans by these harmful posts. The agency has vowed to continue its proactive and uncompromising stance against online harassment to safeguard the well-being of its artist and her fanbase.
Lastly, a key figure in initiating claims against IU failed to appear at the initial court hearing for a damages lawsuit in July. The next hearing is scheduled for December 4, underscoring that the legal processes are ongoing.
