The Seo-Seoul Museum of Art is presenting an exhibition of works by Lee Woo Sung in the Play Lounge on the first floor.
Titled “But some day, one day, soon,” the exhibition brings together three works spanning animation, sound and painting. It will remain on view in Gallery 3 through Oct. 11.
The central work, also titled “But some day, one day, soon” (2021), is an animated video constructed from 1,969 individual drawings of waves repeatedly forming and disappearing.
Lee created the work during the Covid-19 pandemic, when much of everyday life had shifted online. Recalling the sea he had encountered in New Zealand several years earlier, he played footage of it on a laptop, placed transparent OHP film over the screen and traced the changing water frame by frame.
The completed drawings were then arranged in sequence, transforming static images into a moving painting. Each sheet captures a distinct moment, but the individual images form a continuous flow when viewed together. Traces of one wave pass into the next, reflecting the sea’s refusal to remain in a fixed state.
Piano passages of different lengths accompany the animation. As the image and sound sequences repeat, they meet and diverge at changing points, continually producing new combinations.
The Play Lounge is designed as an open space between an exhibition gallery and a rest area. Visitors may watch the work, listen to the music or remain in the space, experiencing its shifting rhythm in their own way.
Born in Seoul in 1983, Lee Woo Sung has developed a painting practice based on observations of everyday life and personal experience. His work often begins when a familiar landscape suddenly appears unfamiliar, revealing memories and emotions embedded within ordinary scenes.
Admission is free, and no docent tours are scheduled. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and public holidays during the exhibition period. It is closed on Mondays.
