Pixar Animation Studios' latest masterpiece, "Elemental," has captivated the hearts of audiences in Korea, shattering box office records and earning its place as the most-viewed Pixar film ever released in the country.
According to data compiled by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), "Elemental" achieved a remarkable milestone, drawing over 5 million moviegoers as of Monday, marking the 40th day of its release. This impressive feat surpassed the previous record held by Pixar's acclaimed film "Inside Out" (2015), which had attracted 4.97 million viewers.
With a cumulative audience of 5.03 million, "Elemental" claims the third-highest box office record in Korea this year, trailing behind the Korean action comedy series "The Roundup: No Way Out" with 10.67 million admissions and the Japanese animated film "Suzume" with 5.54 million admissions.
The heartwarming animation, which weaves a tale of four elements - fire, water, land, and air - coexisting in a vibrant bayside city connected by bridges, has resonated deeply with Korean audiences. Directed by Korean American filmmaker Peter Sohn, the movie holds a personal touch as he drew inspiration from his own childhood in New York, highlighting the sacrifices made by his Korean immigrant parents.
"Elemental" has not only conquered the Korean box office but has also made significant strides globally, posting 49.7 billion won ($38.5 million) in ticket sales in Korea. Although the film performed well in North America with $137 million in revenue, this result is considered comparatively modest for Pixar, known for its exceptional creativity and commercial success in the animation realm.
As "Elemental" continues to cast its enchanting spell on viewers, its heartwarming narrative and emotional resonance have undoubtedly contributed to its immense popularity, making it a standout success for Pixar Animation Studios and a memorable addition to the cherished canon of animated classics.
