Sayart.net - PARK Wunggyu′s Solo Exhibition ′Intestine for Ritual′ Explores Ambivalence and Symbolism

SEOUL, May 18(SA) - ARARIO GALLERY Seoul is set to host the highly anticipated solo exhibition of artist PARK Wunggyu, titled "Intestine for Ritual," starting from May 24th and running through July 1st, with Saturday viewings available.

PARK, born in 1987 and specializing in oriental painting, has been at the forefront of exploring the pictorial potential of this traditional art form. His unique approach involves capturing the symbolic interplay of affirmation and denial on canvas, using objects that elicit ambiguous emotions. In this exhibition, he presents his renowned "Dummy" series along with 14 new and previously displayed works, which serve as an extension of his earlier creations. PARK's artistic development centers on his response to their formal qualities. He skillfully incorporates the enigmatic emotions and sensations evoked by "negativity" - encompassing unclean elements, situations, and emotions - by drawing from the painting methods found in oriental art.

The focal point of this solo exhibition is the depiction of intestines, extracted from animal carcasses. Curiously, these same intestines also play a crucial role in the creation of 'sundae,' a traditional Korean delicacy. With an aesthetic attitude, PARK approaches the personal memories associated with sundae and intestines, inviting viewers to contemplate a range of thoughts and emotions. The artist's choice of subject matter in his artwork holds the power to provoke diverse reactions among the audience.
