In a decisive legal triumph, singer Chuu, born Kim Ji-woo, has secured the annulment of her exclusive contract with her former agency BlockBerry Creative. Following a protracted legal battle spanning a year and eight months, the Seoul Northern District Court ruled in favor of Chuu on Thursday, also ordering the agency to cover the expenses incurred during the lawsuit.

The contract in question was drafted in December 2017, marking the commencement of Chuu's journey within the girl group Loona. While the girl group officially debuted in 2018, the groundwork for their activities had been laid the preceding year, as individual members embarked on their respective projects.

Tensions between Chuu and BlockBerry Creative came to the forefront last November, when the agency controversially "expelled" Chuu from the girl group, alleging instances of verbal abuse directed at staff members. In response, Chuu, supported by fellow group members and collaborating staff, vehemently refuted these accusations. Subsequently, in December of the same year, Chuu filed an injunction with the court to contest her exclusive contract with the agency.

After enduring months of legal proceedings, Chuu emerged victorious, leading to the termination of her contract with BlockBerry Creative. In a positive turn of events, Chuu had already embarked on a new chapter by signing with ATRP, her new agency, last April. This transition followed a court-imposed suspension of her contract with BlockBerry Creative in March.

Chuu's legal victory marks the culmination of a rigorous battle for her autonomy within the entertainment industry, highlighting the complexities and challenges that artists can face in their pursuit of creative expression and fair treatment within the confines of agency contracts.
