November 17th, 2023 - Jangheung Prison, where more than 20 movies and dramas are filmed every year, presents a unique prison culture experience event. From November 14th to December 3rd, as a fall-only event, they will be holding a contemporary art exhibition, PRISONALE, and a prison experience play, ‘PRISONOLE’
매년 20편 이상의 영화와 드라마를 촬영하는 장흥교도소에는 이색적인 감옥문화 체험행사를 선보입니다. 11월 14일부터 12월 3일까지 가을 한정 이벤트로 현대미술 전시회인 프리즈날레와 교도소 체험연극인 프리즈놀래’행사를 진행합니다.
‘PRISONALE’ is a compound word of ‘prison’ and ‘Biennale.’ This is a contemporary art exhibition collaborating with artists Soobin Lee, Gyumin Kim, and Inho Choi, who graduated from the Dresden College of Art and Design in Germany and has been exhibiting in the field of contemporary art. An installation that preserves the original characteristics of the prison and reinterprets it in a modern way in the internal detention building, which is the darkest space in the prison and has a distinct aesthetic color. They present the world of media art and conceptual art. Anyone of elementary school age or older can participate in the experience.
'프리즈날레 PRISONALE'는 ‘프리즌(prison·감옥)’과 ‘비엔날레(Biennale)’의 합성어 입니다. 독일 드레스덴 조형예술대를 졸업하고 현대미술분야에서 전시를 이어오고 있는 이수빈 작가를 비롯하여, 김규민, 최인호 작가가 협업해 진행하는 현대미술 전시입니다. 교도소 내 가장 어두운 공간이자 미학적 색채가 뚜렷한 내부수용동에서 교도소 본래의 특성을 보존하며 현대적으로 재해석한 설치, . 미디어아트, 개념미술 세계를 선보입니다. 체험은 초등학생 이상 이면 누구나 참여할 수 있습니다.
‘PRISONOLE’ is a combination of ‘prison’ and the Korean word ‘nole’, meaning ‘let’s have fun in prison.’ This is an experiential program where participants transform into inmates and follow an interesting story while moving throughout the prison with actors and solving quizzes. The theater arts creative group in charge of the event is a theater group made up of Jangheung theater artists, and has been conducting creative and performance projects by discovering local materials.
프리즈놀래 PRISONOLE'는 ‘프리즌’과 한글의 “놀래’를 합쳐 ‘감옥에서 신나게 놀아보자’는 뜻을 담았습니다. 참여자가 수감자로 변해 흥미로운 이야기를 따라 배우와 함께 교도소 전역을 이동하며 퀴즈를 푸는 체험형 프로그램 입니다. 진행을 맡은 극예술창작집단 장흥 연극인들로 구성된 연극단체로 그간 지역 소재를 발굴해 창작 및 공연사업을 펼쳐왔습니다.
Kim Young-hyeon, head of the project group, said, "Because it is currently under construction, we prepared it on a pilot basis in case of a safety accident, but this event records the process of connecting young artists in the region with the abandoned prison, a cultural resource in Jangheung-gun, and has the potential to create a healthy and self-sustaining local cultural ecosystem. He said that it would be an opportunity to evaluate the future and expressed his hope that “I hope this will be a creative work that melts the meaning and interpretation of prison into the unique imagination of art.”
김영현 사업단장은 "현재 공사 중이어서 안전사고에 대비해 시범적으로 준비했지만, 이번 행사는 장흥군 문화자원인 폐 교도소와 지역 내 젊은 예술가가 연결되는 과정을 기록하고, 건강하고 자생적인 지역문화 생태계 조성의 가능성을 가늠하는 기회가 될 것이라고 말했습니다. 또한 “교도소의 의미와 해석을 예술 특유의 상상으로 녹여내는 창조적인 작업이 되길 바랍니다” 는 바람을 전했 습니다.
Jangheung Prison is one of the famous filming locations for domestic video content. Representative film productions include “Mother” (2009), Prison (2017), 1987 (2017), King of Prison (2021), and Smuggling (2023), while drama filming includes “Prison Playbook” (2017). and The Devil Judge (2021) and The Glory (2022). The government has selected Jangheung Prison as the site for the ‘Idle Space Cultural Regeneration Project’ and is currently redecorating the inside and outside of the building.
장흥교도소는 유명한 국내 영상콘텐츠 촬영지 중 한 곳 입니다. 대표 영화촬영 작품으로는 “영화 마더(2009년), 프리즌(2017년), 1987(2017년), 범털(2021년), 밀수(2023년) 가 있으며 드라마 촬영으로는 슬기로운 감빵생활(2017년)과 악마판사(2021년), 더 글로리(2022년) 등 이 있습니다. 정부는 장흥교도소를 ‘유휴공간 문화재생사업’ 대상지로 선정하고 건물 안팎을 새롭게 꾸미고 있는 중 입니다.
