The terminals of Korea's two biggest airports, Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport, have been turned into surprising art places.
대한민국 양대 공항인 인천국제공항과 김포공항의 터미널이 놀라운 예술 공간으로 탈바꿈했습니다.
The three exhibitions, which are spread out across the airports, run at the same time as the major art fairs Frieze and Kiaf Seoul. They give visitors an idea of how diverse the Korean art scene is, from Nam June Paik's TV installation to works made by media artists who went to the polar regions.
공항 곳곳에 펼쳐지는 3개의 전시는 주요 아트페어인 프리즈, 키아프 서울과 동시에 진행됩니다. 백남준의 TV 설치 작품부터 극지방을 여행한 미디어 작가들의 작품까지 한국 미술계의 다양성을 실감케 합니다.
As its name, "Direct from Antarctica and the Arctic to Incheon Airport," suggests, the exhibition, which runs until November 30 in Terminal 2's departure hall, shows the work of seven artists who took part in the Arts Council Korea (ARKO) and Korea Polar Research Institute's annual polar residency program since 2011.
11월 30일까지 제2여객터미널 출국장에서 열리는 이번 전시는 '남극과 북극에서 인천공항으로'라는 제목으로 진행됩니다. 한국문화예술위원회(ARKO)와 극지연구소는 2011년부터 현재까지 매년 극지 레지던시 프로그램을 진행하고 있습니다.
These artists, who either stayed at King Sejong Station in Antarctica or went to the Arctic Ocean on Korea's first icebreaker Araon, imagine the remote, sparsely populated polar areas as eye-catching media pieces and installations.
남극의 세종기지에 머물거나 한국 최초의 쇄빙선 아라온호를 타고 북극해에 갔던 작가들은 인적 드문 오지의 극지방을 미디어 작품과 설치물로 구현 해 냈습니다.
"2048" by Kim Se-jin looks at the uncertain geopolitical future of Antarctica. It focuses on the year that the Antarctic Treaty, which was signed in 1959 to demilitarize the area and encourage international science cooperation, will end.
김세진의 '2048'은 남극 대륙의 불확실한 지정학적 미래를 바라봅니다. 1959년 이 지역을 비무장화하고 국제 과학 협력을 장려하기 위해 체결한 남극조약이 끝나는 해에 주목합니다.
Son Kwang-ju's "Phaedo" compares the way the Arctic Ocean is now because of climate change to Socrates' last words. Cho Kwang-hee's "A Beautiful Disappearance" is a video loop of man-sized icebergs melting away in just a few days, with strange popping sounds.
손광주의 <파이돈>은 기후변화로 지금 북극해가 변한 모습을 소크라테스의 유언에 비유합니다. 조광희의 '아름다운 소실'은 사람 크기의 빙산이 펑하는 소리와 함께 며칠 만에 녹아내리는 루프 영상을 보여줍니다.
"As we planned this show, we realized that airports and polar circles have a lot in common," said organizer Kim Hyo-jeong. "Both places don't belong to a certain country. The way we see time in these places is also very different from everywhere else. And no one can live permanently in either the airport or the polar areas."
주최측인 김효정 씨는 “이번 공연을 기획하면서 공항과 극지방이 공통점이 많다는 것을 깨달았습니다. "두 곳 모두 특정 국가에 속하지 않습니다. 우리가 이곳에서 시간을 보는 방식도 다른 곳과 매우 다릅니다. 그리고 아무도 공항이나 극지방에 영구적으로 살 수 없습니다."라 말했습니다.
As part of the "Be Free" show at Gimpo International Airport, sculptures and works by five veteran artists, like the video art pioneer Paik (1932–2006), are on display in the third-floor departure halls.
김포국제공항에서 열리는 “자유롭게” 전시의 일환으로 3층 출국장에는 비디오 아트의 선구자인 백남준(1932~2006)을 비롯한 베테랑 작가 5인의 조각과 작품이 전시됩니다.
In Paik's 1998 work "I Never Read Wittgenstein," four cathode ray tube monitors are set up against a striped background. The colors of the stripes come from both the classic TV test pattern and "obangsaek," which are Korea's five primary colors.
백남준의 1998년 작품인 "나는 비트겐슈타인을 읽지 않는다"에서 줄무늬 배경에 4개의 음극선관 모니터가 설치되어 있습니다. 줄무늬의 색상은 고전적인 TV 테스트 패턴과 한국의 전통인 "오방색"에서 가져왔습니다.
Through the piece, the artist rejects Ludwig Wittgenstein's important ideas about logic and language from the 20th century. Instead, he "chooses to communicate with the audience in his own language," says ARTPARK, the group putting on the show.
작품을 통해 작가는 20세기의 논리와 언어에 대한 루드비히 비트겐슈타인의 중요한 생각을 거부합니다. 대신 그는 "관객과 자신의 언어로 소통하기로 선택한다"고 말했습니다.
The "Gundam" series by media artist Lee Lee Nam is also on display. It turns famous statues like Rodin's "The Thinker" and Michelangelo's "David" into popular children's robot toys covered in mother-of-pearl.
미디어 아티스트 이이남의 건담' 시리즈도 전시됩니다. 로댕의 "생각하는 사람"과 미켈란젤로의 "다비드"와 같은 유명한 조각상을 자개로 덮인 어린이 로봇 장난감으로 바꾼 작품입니다.
"Be Free" is on until October 22.
“자유롭게”는 10월 22일까지 전시 됩니다.
