Soul Art Space: A Hub of Korean Artistic Innovation /Galleries Art Fair 2023

Promoting Korean Artists to International Audiences with Innovative Exhibitions and Artist Support Programs

Soul Art Space, a prominent gallery in Korea, is gearing up for its participation in the renowned Galleries Art Fair 2023. Located in Busan, Soul Art Space has been at the forefront of discovering and supporting Korean artists since its opening in 2005. With branches in Guseo and Haeundae, the gallery has been a driving force in showcasing innovative exhibitions by established artists such as Dukki Kim, Duckyong Kim, Myoungho Lee, Leenam Lee, Jeonglok Lee, Sangbin Im, and Youngwook Choi, as well as internationally renowned artists like Eva Armisen and Abbas Kiarostami.

One of the unique features of Soul Art Space is its commitment to promoting Korean artists and their distinctive cultural characteristics and identities. The gallery has been a platform for artists who reinterpret traditional Korean philosophy and spirit through the language of modern art. With a focus on supporting individual artists, Soul Art Space re-established its Gu-seo branch as Soul Art & Film Institute Lab in 2016. This lab hosts discussions on current issues in the art industry and serves as an innovative art platform in the region.

Soul Art Space also goes beyond traditional exhibitions by offering residential artist support programs, workshops, and informational sessions. The gallery creates creative platforms for dialogue and interactions through music concerts and film showings, in addition to art exhibits. The gallery aims to inspire both viewers who seek to be moved by art and artists who strive for inspiration.

The artists selected by Soul Art Space for this year's Galleries Art Fair 2023 represent a diverse range of artistic styles and mediums. Myungkeun Koh, a pioneering artist in the genre of 'photo sculpture,' has been pushing the boundaries of photography and three-dimensional objects since the late 1980s. Jeonglok Lee's analog photos, taken with a film camera, are unique in their painterly quality. Sangbin Im creates his works by weaving selected cuts from numerous photographs taken over a long period of time or from various angles, resulting in a cohesive whole. JEJE's works convey a message of rediscovering innocence through the common characteristics of nature and children. Changmin Lim's works capture small movements and moments of stillness through windows, drawing on her background in photography, video, and film. Dukki Kim's works exude happiness and brightness, reflecting the artist's optimistic worldview. Youngwook Choi, a renowned Korean painter, infuses traditional Korean aesthetics with a modern twist in his famous moon jar series.

As Soul Art Space prepares for its participation in the Galleries Art Fair 2023, the gallery's commitment to promoting Korean artists and providing innovative platforms for artistic expression remains unwavering. Through its exhibitions, artist support programs, and creative initiatives, Soul Art Space continues to foster a vibrant artistic community in Busan and beyond, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and contemporary artistic innovation of Korea to international audiences.
