Christie's has announced strong results across three major design auctions held in New York, with combined sales totalling $27 million and achieving 125 per cent of low estimates.
The auction series comprised three separate sales: 1925 | A Modern Vision, Design, and Tiffany Studios, celebrating the centenary of the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris.
The 1925 | A Modern Vision sale generated $7.6 million, with works by French designer Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann leading the category. A personal desk and armchair from 1929-1933 sold for $1.016 million, whilst a Grande Cannelée à Redents commode from the Edlis | Neeson Collection achieved $482,600. A Jean Dunand dressing mirror from 1927 realised $952,500, and an Ivan Da Silva Bruhns carpet from the Palace of the Maharaja of Indore sold for $571,500, more than double its low estimate.
The Design sale was dominated by contemporary sculptor Claude Lalanne, whose unique Structure végétale aux papillons et oiseaux chandelier from 2007 realised $2.149 million. A Ginkgo dining table by the same artist sold for $889,000. Works by François-Xavier Lalanne also performed strongly, with an Agneau sculpture achieving $698,500 and a Wapiti maquette selling for $457,200, nearly eight times its low estimate.
A pair of rare Diego Giacometti chandeliers from circa 1965 realised $1.778 million, more than doubling their high estimate of $800,000. A Carlo Mollino low table from 1949-1950 sold for $596,900, also exceeding expectations by more than double.
Pottery works from the Collection of Robert F. and Patricia G. Ross Weis performed exceptionally well. A Hans Coper large spade form from 1966 sold for $330,200, nearly three times its high estimate, whilst a Lucie Rie footed bowl from 1984 achieved $146,050.
The Tiffany Studios sale was led by a Birches and Irises landscape window from circa 1915, which sold for $571,500. An Important and Rare Daffodil chandelier from 1900 realised $482,600, and a Poppy table lamp on a rare bird skeleton base from 1910 achieved $254,000.
