EM Gallery begins 2025 with a thought-provoking group exhibition titled Paths Opening from Dead Ends. Running from January 16 to March 2 at Everyday Mooonday in Seoul, the exhibition brings together seven contemporary artists—Hamjin, Lee Young Uk, Jo Eun Si, Moonassi, Ho Sang Geun, Hwaran, and Park Ji Eun—who explore the challenges and transformations encountered when facing life’s barriers.
Obstacles, whether personal struggles, societal constructs, or physical limitations, often appear as impenetrable walls blocking progress. However, this exhibition seeks to challenge the perception of these walls as endings, proposing instead that they can serve as turning points for new possibilities and creativity.
Art, as reflected in this exhibition, becomes both the residue of human struggle and the outcome of explorations beyond visible and invisible barriers. Limitations, paradoxically, can act as catalysts for innovation. When choices are constrained, familiar patterns of thought are disrupted, allowing the birth of new perspectives and creative solutions. These moments of transformation are reflected in the artists’ experimental practices, where boundaries are crossed, and fresh aesthetic languages are forged.
Korean poet Park Yeon Jun draws a parallel between this process and the Japanese technique of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with lacquer and gold, creating beauty from imperfection. She describes this as "moving forward while cherishing flaws." Similarly, the works in Paths Opening from Dead Ends embrace the cracks and disruptions in life, reimagining them as opportunities for renewal and growth.
The participating artists bring deeply personal perspectives to the exhibition. Their works capture the struggles, reflections, and breakthroughs that arise when confronting limitations. From physical forms to conceptual messages, the exhibition reveals how adversity can lead to profound artistic innovation and emotional resonance.
