According to SayArt on August 8, the multidisciplinary cultural space MERGE? will present "Onggi," a collaborative performance project organized as part of the Body Plus initiative.
The performance brings together Spain-based performance artist Lucía Callén and visual artist, designer and sound artist Hong Seong-ryul. The two artists will present a structured improvisational performance in which movement and sound interact in real time.
Callén's artistic practice is centered on Synaptic Butoh, an approach that combines contemporary Butoh with neuroscience and visual art. Her work explores the body as a living landscape where memory, imagination and nature intersect, using movement to express invisible sensations and accumulated experiences.
Inspired by Korea's traditional onggi earthenware, the performance connects the vessel's qualities of preservation and fermentation with the human body. Drawing on Korean folklore and the movement language of Butoh, the work presents the body as a vessel shaped by desire, shame, absence and transformation.
Throughout the performance, movement and sound continuously respond to one another, creating a live dialogue between performers and audio elements. The work explores relationships between transformation, the body, sound, tradition and contemporary artistic practice through an immersive sensory experience.
"Onggi" will be presented at 6 p.m. on August 8 at MERGE?. The performance is expected to introduce audiences to a collaborative approach that combines physical expression and live sound while examining the body through contemporary performance art.
