In an era where artificial intelligence increasingly intersects with human creativity, artist and poet Sasha Stiles is pushing the boundaries of what it means to create art in the digital age. Since 2018, Stiles has been conducting groundbreaking experiments through her collaboration with Technelegy, an evolving artificial intelligence system that has been specifically trained to emulate and enhance her distinctive writing style and voice. Now, their ongoing partnership has produced "A Living Poem," an innovative installation that represents the next phase in exploring how human and machine minds can work together to process language and create entirely new forms of artistic expression. The installation features an infinite text that operates through a unique combination of human imagination and sophisticated computer algorithms. Drawing inspiration from text-based artworks within the museum's permanent collection, this dynamic poem continuously rewrites and performs itself, with complete transformations occurring every 60 minutes. Each iteration of the poem comes to life in real time through an intricate system that includes a custom-built language model, carefully crafted prompting techniques, specialized datasets, and multiple sensory elements including voice, sound, and visual components. The visual presentation of the work is particularly striking, with words appearing in various fonts, including a specially created typeface called Cursive Binary. This innovative font represents a fusion of Stiles' personal handwriting with the fundamental zeros and ones of binary code, serving as a powerful poetic metaphor for humanity's continuously evolving relationship with technology. Stiles has characterized this ambitious project as a "poem in residence," effectively transforming the screen located in the museum lobby into what she describes as an autonomous notebook that operates independently while visitors observe its creative process. The installation also incorporates an intimate and immersive soundscape created by Stiles' studio partner, Kris Bones, which serves as a reminder of poetry's deep historical roots in oral tradition and spoken word performance. Visitors can access this carefully crafted auditory experience through a QR code system, making the sound component easily accessible to anyone interacting with the installation. When combined, these multiple layers create what the artists describe as a dynamic language system - essentially a poem that reveals new aspects of itself moment by moment, constantly evolving and becoming something new, never reaching a final, finished state. The project represents a significant exploration of fundamental questions about human identity and creativity in an age where artificial intelligence plays an increasingly prominent role in artistic creation. Through her collaboration with Technelegy, Stiles examines how both human and machine intelligence process language differently, and how these different approaches can be combined to create entirely new forms of artistic expression suitable for our rapidly changing technological landscape. The exhibition has been organized by Martha Joseph, who serves as Associate Curator in the Department of Media and Performance, working alongside Juyeon Song, who holds the position of Hyundai Card Exchange Visitor. Their collaboration has brought this innovative intersection of technology, poetry, and visual art to museum visitors, offering them a unique opportunity to witness the real-time creation of art through the partnership between human creativity and artificial intelligence.
