A solo exhibition by Lee Dong Min, a 28-year-old artist on the autism spectrum, is running at Kensington Resort Seorak Beach in Goseong, Gangwon Province, through the end of the year.
Titled “Lee Dong Min’s Warm Steps: Around the Earth in Coloured Pencil, Following the Footprints,” the exhibition presents work developed through the artist’s sustained interest in animals.
According to the exhibition organiser, Lee has filled about 40,000 sheets of A4 paper and used approximately 876 kilograms of coloured pencils over the past 20 years. The combined length of the lines he has drawn is estimated at 39,201 kilometres—close to the distance around the Earth.
Lee’s research extends beyond drawing. He has collected zoo tickets, animal videos and more than 4,500 animal models, using repeated observation to reinterpret the physical characteristics of different species through strong lines and bright colours.
Animal feet are a recurring motif in his work. Their differing shapes and structures reflect the distinctive way in which Lee observes and remembers animals.
The exhibition was organised by SYS PLANET and is supported by the Korea Disability Arts and Culture Center and Kensington Hotels & Resorts. It forms part of this year’s program supporting the development of art by disabled artists.
