Acclaimed Author Hwang Sok-yong Honored with South Korea's Most Prestigious Cultural Award

Renowned South Korean novelist Hwang Sok-yong has been selected to receive the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit, the nation's highest honor for cultural achievement. The prestigious award recognizes the 82-year-old literary master's extraordinary contributions to Korean literature and his profound impact on the country's cultural landscape over more than five decades.

The Ministry of Culture announced that Hwang is one of 33 distinguished recipients chosen for the 2025 cultural awards, which celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of culture and the arts. Among these honorees, 17 individuals will receive various levels of the Order of Cultural Merit, with Hwang receiving the most prestigious Geumgwan level.

Hwang's literary legacy includes some of Korea's most celebrated works, including "Jang Gil-san," "Princess Bari," and "A Road to Sampo." The ministry praised the acclaimed author for his exceptional ability to provide profound insights into social realities and his remarkable contributions to social healing and reflection through his writing. His novels have consistently addressed complex social issues and have played a crucial role in shaping the direction of Korean literature for more than half a century.

The award ceremony was held at the Modeu Art Theater located in central Seoul, where all 33 recipients were honored for their outstanding achievements. Kim Young-soo, the ministry's first vice minister, delivered congratulatory remarks during the ceremony, expressing his sincere appreciation for all the awardees' contributions to Korean culture.

"I extend my sincere congratulations and respect to all 33 awardees," Kim stated during the ceremony. He also emphasized the government's ongoing commitment to supporting cultural development, pledging continued efforts "to realize the vision of Korea as a cultural powerhouse" on the global stage. The recognition of Hwang and other cultural figures represents South Korea's dedication to honoring those who have elevated the nation's artistic and cultural standing internationally.
