Desert X, the groundbreaking exhibition that has revolutionized land art for the modern era, will commemorate its 10th anniversary in 2027 with significant changes including an extended six-month season, new curatorial leadership, and ambitious international expansion plans. The milestone edition will run from October 30, 2027, through May 7, 2028, representing a dramatic extension from its typical two-month format to capture the desert's evolving seasonal beauty and coincide with major Southern California cultural events.
The extended timeline will align Desert X with several prestigious cultural occasions in the region, including the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Modernism Week, Frieze Los Angeles, and the renowned Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. This strategic scheduling reflects the organization's evolution from an experimental biennial project into a permanent fixture on the international art calendar.
"Over the past decade, Desert X has evolved from an idea into a movement," stated Susan Davis, who founded the initiative in 2017 with the vision of bringing large-scale, site-specific art installations to the Coachella Valley. The project has successfully attracted more than 130 commissioned artists and welcomed over two million visitors since its inception, establishing itself as one of the world's most prominent public art initiatives.
The 2027 exhibition will continue under the artistic direction of Neville Wakefield, who will be joined by Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas in her new role as the organization's first permanent curator. Garcia-Maestas brings extensive experience from co-curating the 2025 Desert X edition and her previous leadership of the exhibition program at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York. Their collaborative approach will emphasize the desert as both subject matter and artistic medium, featuring works designed to evolve alongside the natural landscape.
Desert X's international presence is expanding significantly, with the organization developing plans for future editions in Mexico while building upon its established partnership in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. Desert X AlUla 2026, operating under the theme "Space Without Measure," will take place from January 16 to February 28, 2026. This fourth collaboration with Arts AlUla will showcase ten new site-specific installations inspired by the poetry of Kahlil Gibran, created by both Saudi and international artists under the direction of Wakefield and Raneem Farsi, along with two additional guest curators to be announced.
The anniversary celebration occurs during a broader cultural renaissance in desert regions, with several developments indicating the area's emergence as a major art world destination beyond traditional coastal centers. The Palm Springs Art Museum recently appointed Christine Vendredi as its new director, bringing her experience as global director of art, culture and heritage at Louis Vuitton. Additionally, the High Desert Art Fair is preparing to launch in Joshua Tree's historic Pioneertown, featuring a gallery roster to be revealed in January and performances by notable artists including Mark Mothersbaugh and Money Mark, a frequent Beastie Boys collaborator.
This cultural momentum extends beyond the art world, with Coachella achieving sold-out status for the first time in years, demonstrating increased interest in the region. These developments signal a growing integration of art, culture, and fashion industries in desert locations, challenging the dominance of traditional urban art centers.
"For ten years, we've welcomed the public to encounter ambitious works outside of the traditional art spaces—projects that reshape how we understand this landscape and the histories held within it," explained Jenny Gil, Desert X's executive director. "These artists invite visitors to step into the desert not as spectators, but as participants. Marking this anniversary is less about looking back than recommitting to that vision: supporting artists who challenge, illuminate, and ultimately transform our relationship to place and to each other."
The upcoming 2027 edition represents Desert X's strategy to consolidate its international reputation while positioning the desert as a new center of artistic influence. The extended season format will allow visitors to experience how the installations interact with the desert's changing conditions throughout different seasons, from the cooler autumn months through the vibrant spring period. This approach aligns with Desert X's core philosophy of creating art that responds dynamically to its environment, offering visitors multiple opportunities to witness the evolving relationship between human creativity and natural landscapes.
