Manchester city center will transform into a woolly wonderland this winter as six uniquely designed Shaun the Sheep sculptures arrive as part of an exciting public art installation. The "Find the Flock" sculpture trail, running from November 27 through January 4, celebrates the highly anticipated European premiere of "Shaun the Sheep's Circus Show" at the prestigious Aviva Studios.
The collaborative art trail represents a partnership between global art producer Wild in Art and Academy Award-winning independent animation studio Aardman. Each vibrant sculpture stands an impressive 160 centimeters tall and has been individually crafted by renowned national and international artists. Visitors who discover the sculptures can learn more about the creative minds behind each piece while enjoying clever sheep-themed jokes at every location.
"We are delighted to bring Shaun the Sheep to Manchester for the festive season," said Ngaio Harding-Hill, Head of Attractions and Live Experiences at Aardman. "Find the Flock is a wonderful opportunity for fans of all ages to celebrate Shaun's arrival ahead of his Circus Show premiere at Aviva Studios, and we can't wait to see everyone join in the fun."
John McGrath, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Factory International, emphasized the project's significance for the city. "Wild in Art's public works create lasting memories in cities across the globe, including here in Manchester where we still enjoy Bee in the City at iconic locations across the city center," McGrath explained. "Working with Wild in Art and building on our relationship with world-famous animation studio Aardman, Find the Flock is a joyful art trail bringing the excitement of Shaun the Sheep's Circus Show out into St. Johns and Spinningfields."
The main attraction, "Shaun the Sheep's Circus Show," makes its European debut at Aviva Studios from December 11 through January 4. This groundbreaking production, brought to life by internationally acclaimed circus company Circa and Aardman, combines the beloved character's classic slapstick comedy with live circus performance. The show simultaneously blurs the lines between movement, dance, theater, and circus, creating a visual spectacle packed with wit and wonder.
Families and art enthusiasts can collect official trail maps from John Rylands Library or Aviva Studios to begin their sheep-hunting adventure. The sculptures are strategically placed between these two iconic locations, creating an engaging journey through Manchester's cultural heart.
The artistic lineup features six distinctive pieces, each reflecting the unique vision of its creator. "Counting Sheep!" by freelance illustrator Katy Dynes graces Crown Square in Spinningfields. Dynes' diverse portfolio spans book illustration, cartoons, pet portraits, murals, and children's art workshops. Meanwhile, "The Bee Sheeper" by environmental artist Ali Elly stands proudly outside John Rylands Library in Spinningfields Square. Elly draws inspiration from the natural world, connecting scientific narrative with artistic observation to explore species aesthetics and translate natural movements into bold designs.
In Hardman Gardens, visitors will discover "Shaunberry" by Manchester-based fine artist Jodie Silverman from GRIT Studios. Silverman describes her artistic style as magical realism, often working figuratively while incorporating natural and surreal elements. "BaaArt Deco Shaun" by prolific artist Mik Richardson awaits outside Soho House on Quay Street in St. Johns. The Norfolk-based Richardson brings extensive experience, having participated in over 50 Wild in Art trails and painted more than 100 sculptures throughout his career.
Near Aviva Studios, two final sculptures complete the collection. "Shaun the Shape" by Manchester-based illustrator and community artist Kelly Ma stands at the River Square Entrance. Ma's work explores playful visual connections between people, culture, and cities. Finally, "Classic Shaun" by the Wild in Art Studio team guards the City Square Entrance, representing the creative vision of the organization that has animated cities worldwide since 2008, including Manchester, Sydney, Auckland, Cape Town, and São Paulo.
This winter celebration represents more than just public art; it serves as a bridge between Manchester's rich cultural heritage and contemporary creative expression. The trail offers families a perfect holiday activity while supporting the city's reputation as a hub for innovative arts programming and community engagement during the festive season.
