Japanese architecture firm Nikken Sekkei has completed the Xingyun-1 Building, a striking super-tall office tower located at the southwest corner of Shanghai West Bund Media Port in China's Xuhui District. The 78,855-square-meter building, finished in 2023, stands as a significant addition to an area known for its concentration of cutting-edge media and cultural industries along the west bank of the Huangpu River.
Designed specifically to support future-oriented creators and serve as a hub for advanced information and communications technology (ICT) companies and the gaming industry, the building represents a new approach to workplace design. The project aims to accommodate the evolving working styles of creative professionals while contributing to the revitalization of the surrounding urban area. The tower's strategic location in the media port positions it as a key player in Shanghai's growing technology and creative sector.
The architectural design emphasizes both presence and functionality, creating a landmark structure that responds to the unique needs of its tech-focused tenants. Nikken Sekkei worked in collaboration with Shanghai Architectural Design & Research Institute for joint design, supervision, and consulting services throughout the project development. The construction was carried out by China Construction Eighth Division Co., Ltd., with specialized architectural curtain wall consulting provided by ALT Limited.
The project was commissioned by Shanghai Building Material Group Technology Development Co., Ltd., reflecting the significant investment in Shanghai's technology infrastructure. The building's completion adds substantial office space to the West Bund area, supporting the district's transformation into a major hub for media, technology, and creative industries. The tower's design considers both the immediate urban context and the broader vision for Shanghai's continued development as a global technology center.
With its completion in 2023, the Xingyun-1 Building joins the growing collection of modern office towers that define Shanghai's evolving skyline. The project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can serve the specific needs of technology companies while contributing to urban renewal and economic development in one of China's most dynamic metropolitan areas.
