South Korean entertainment giant Hybe is launching "Dark Moon: Two Moons," the highly anticipated sequel to its popular vampire-themed webtoon featuring K-pop group Enhypen members as characters. The new series will debut across six major regions starting this Friday, following the massive success of its predecessor which attracted over 200 million readers worldwide.
The company announced Wednesday that the sequel will simultaneously launch in Korea, North America, Japan, Latin America, Indonesia, and Thailand. Korean audiences can access the new episodes through Naver Webtoon's Saturday lineup beginning at 10 p.m. The launch will include ten episodes available immediately, with new installments releasing weekly thereafter.
"Dark Moon: Two Moons" continues the storyline that concluded in October 2023 with the original series "Dark Moon: The Blood Altar." The first webtoon centered around Soo-ha, a teenage girl caught in a supernatural romance with seven vampires who were modeled after the seven members of the popular K-pop group Enhypen. The story explored themes of destiny, love, and the supernatural world.
This webtoon series represents part of Hybe's ambitious Original Story initiative, a strategic program designed to develop narrative content featuring the company's diverse roster of artists. The initiative has previously produced successful titles including "7Fates: Chakho," which was inspired by global superstars BTS, and "The Star Seekers," which featured members of Tomorrow X Together as characters.
The upcoming sequel introduces a mysterious new character named Selen, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the original protagonist Soo-ha. According to Hybe, "Two Moons" will maintain the beloved elements that made the original series successful while incorporating fresh characters and compelling new storylines to expand the Dark Moon universe.
The original "Dark Moon: The Blood Altar" proved to be a phenomenal international success following its January 2022 debut. Made available in ten different languages, the webtoon achieved remarkable milestones across various markets. It dominated Germany's weekly webtoon rankings for an impressive 32 consecutive weeks and maintained a position in France's top 10 rankings for more than 60 weeks. The series reached a significant milestone in July when its total readership crossed the 200 million mark.
The Dark Moon franchise is expanding beyond webtoons into other media formats. Sony-owned animation studio Aniplex is producing an anime adaptation of "Dark Moon: The Blood Altar," which is scheduled to premiere in Japan on January 9. This multimedia approach demonstrates Hybe's commitment to developing comprehensive entertainment ecosystems around their intellectual properties.
"We expect the sequel to captivate fans worldwide," stated a Hybe representative. "New characters and plot developments should offer something compelling even for readers unfamiliar with the original." The company's confidence reflects the growing global appetite for K-pop-inspired content and the successful integration of music and storytelling in digital entertainment platforms.
