The Roger Stevens Building at the University of Leeds, which houses 25 lecture theaters, has been voted as the city's favorite building constructed in the past 60 years. The landmark university structure received the People's Choice Award as part of the Leeds Architecture Awards 2025, marking a significant recognition for the campus facility.

Built during the 1970s, the Roger Stevens Building emerged victorious from a competitive public voting process. The building was selected from a shortlist of 10 notable nominations, including prominent structures such as Bridgewater Place and Victoria Gate, all of which were constructed in Leeds between 1965 and 2025.

Martin Hamilton from Leeds Civic Trust praised the building's distinctive characteristics, noting that it possesses an "elegance and sculptural quality" that distinguishes it from many other structures built during the same era. According to Hamilton, "The building is somewhere that if you know about it, you can't fail to recognize it. It's very distinctive and there will be generations of students who have passed through it."

The university's official website describes the Roger Stevens Building as "fusing together 1950s architectural design with a contemporary infrastructure throughout many of the theaters." The building is strategically positioned in the heart of the university campus, making it a central hub for academic activities. The structure is named after a distinguished British academic, diplomat, and civil servant who served as the university's vice-chancellor from 1963 to 1970.

The People's Choice Award was specifically introduced as a new category to commemorate the Leeds Civic Trust's 60th anniversary. This special recognition aims to celebrate "excellence in design and placemaking across the city," highlighting the community's appreciation for architectural achievements that have shaped Leeds over the decades. The Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility in Leeds was also recognized among the top three finalists in the competition.
