A provocative artwork depicting Donald Trump crucified on a cross has sparked controversy after going on display at an art gallery in Basel, Switzerland. The sculpture, titled "Saint or Sinner," was created by London-based artist Mason Storm, who is known for appearing in public wearing a mask to maintain anonymity.
The artwork measures 1.47 meters by 83 centimeters and features a nearly life-like representation of the former U.S. president strapped to a wooden cross. The piece has been on public display since Saturday at Gallery Gleis 4, located in the Kunstmeile Basel exhibition area. Despite being newly exhibited, the sculpture has already been sold to a private collector.
According to gallery owner Melanie Breznik, the buyer is "an internationally known person" who wishes to remain anonymous. The insurance value of the controversial piece has reportedly reached the higher six-figure range, reflecting both its artistic significance and the attention it has generated. The sale was completed even before the public exhibition began, indicating strong interest in Storm's provocative work.
The sculpture has already drawn criticism from various quarters, with discussions about its appropriateness and artistic merit beginning even before its public unveiling. The piece represents Storm's characteristic style of creating politically charged artworks that challenge viewers and spark debate about contemporary figures and religious imagery.
Mason Storm's decision to remain masked during public appearances adds an element of mystery to the artist's persona, allowing the work to speak for itself while avoiding personal notoriety. The "Saint or Sinner" title deliberately plays on the ambiguous nature of public perception regarding Trump, inviting viewers to consider their own interpretations of the controversial political figure.
The exhibition at Gallery Gleis 4 is expected to continue drawing visitors and generating discussion throughout its run. Given the polarizing nature of both the subject matter and the religious symbolism employed, the artwork is likely to remain a topic of debate in art circles and beyond, cementing its place as one of the more provocative political art pieces of recent times.
