Artist Mona Etienne is currently presenting a diverse collection of her artwork at the Triangel gallery in St. Vith, featuring everything from landscapes and portraits to animal depictions. The exhibition offers visitors a comprehensive look at the varied artistic journey of this accomplished painter, who splits her creative time between her homeland and the French coastal region.
The French coastal region serves as Mona Etienne's creative sanctuary, where she spends approximately seven months each year working daily on new paintings. "There's no hustle and bustle for me there. You can really retreat and focus. And the various subjects that I love – like the trees, olive trees, the sea – it's very tempting to paint there," she explains. This tranquil environment provides the perfect backdrop for her artistic endeavors, allowing her to immerse herself fully in her craft.
However, Etienne also draws significant inspiration from her homeland. The Triangel gallery currently displays large-format autumn landscapes and motifs featuring cows and sheep, all expressing her deep love for nature in all its facets. These works demonstrate her ability to capture the essence of different environments and seasons, showcasing her versatility as an artist.
Etienne's artistic journey began early in her family home and eventually led her to art school and into a teaching career. For many years, she taught art at schools in Eupen, St. Vith, and Vielsalm. This extensive teaching experience has significantly shaped her artistic style and approach to creating art.
"When you've studied art and want to pass that knowledge on to children, you should be interested in many different types of art," Etienne reflects on her teaching years. "For example, I love the skies of William Turner. I love Monet. My style often corresponds to what I'm currently painting – with strokes that have rhythm and sometimes seem almost like music." This musical quality in her brushwork reflects her deep understanding of various artistic movements and techniques.
The artist particularly enjoys visits from her former students and warmly welcomes young people to come and be inspired by her work. "Explaining to young people what art means to me – that's a great joy," she says, highlighting her continued passion for art education and mentorship.
Etienne frequently visits the gallery during afternoon hours, making herself available for conversations with visitors who want to learn more about her work and artistic process. This personal interaction adds a special dimension to the exhibition experience, allowing art enthusiasts to gain deeper insights into her creative world.
The exhibition of Mona Etienne's works will remain on display at the Triangel gallery in St. Vith until November 13th. Art lovers and curious visitors alike are encouraged to visit during the afternoon hours when they might have the opportunity to meet the artist in person and engage in meaningful discussions about her artistic journey and creative philosophy.
