A striking new sculpture titled 'Traversée' by French artist Stéphane Thidet has been installed at Château Lagrézette in Caillac, positioned at the entrance to the winery's cellar. The artwork creates a luminous pathway using marble and gold leaf, forming what the artist describes as a line of light that captures and reflects the natural illumination of its surroundings.
The sculpture was completed in 2024 following a prestigious double invitation from both the Louvre Museum and the Var Departmental Exhibition Hotel. Before arriving at its current location at Château Lagrézette, 'Traversée' was exhibited at these renowned institutions and later displayed at the Botanical Garden of Bordeaux, establishing its significance in the contemporary art world.
Talking about his artistic process, Thidet explained his fascination with working with raw marble materials. 'I really love working with the rough side of marble. I then applied gold leaves to it,' the artist shared during the installation. The sculpture has been strategically positioned facing southwest to maximize its interaction with natural light throughout the day, creating an ever-changing visual experience for viewers.
From a distance, the artwork presents a celestial appearance that Thidet describes as resembling 'a constellation fallen from the sky, a chaotic and violent mass from a fall cushioned by the softness of the trace.' The artist suggests that the sculpture could represent 'the remains of a world shattered by conflicts or the telluric movements of the Earth,' inviting viewers to interpret the work through their own experiences and imagination.
Speaking alongside Mathé and Sonia Perrin during the installation, Thidet emphasized the interactive nature of his creation. 'Everyone is free to imagine their own Traversée and let themselves be carried by the experience which will never be quite the same, according to the good will of the sun, the illuminator of our world,' he explained, highlighting how changing light conditions ensure that no two viewings of the sculpture will be identical.
The artwork is now accessible to the public during Château Lagrézette's regular opening hours, offering visitors an opportunity to experience this unique fusion of contemporary art and natural beauty within the historic winery setting.
