The Design Museum in London will present a free exhibition featuring monumental paintings by renowned artist Harland Miller next month. The display will showcase Miller's distinctive Letter Painting series, highlighting his unique approach to combining graphic design elements with fine art through striking typography, bold colors, and imposing scale.
Miller, who has gained recognition as a major figure in contemporary art, is celebrated for his masterful blend of imagery, text, and sharp wit. The exhibition will span two distinct locations within the museum, offering visitors a comprehensive view of his ongoing Letter Painting series. Large canvases will dominate one gallery space, while a complementary collection of works on paper will be installed on the museum's mezzanine level.
The exhibition will feature both newly produced pieces and earlier significant works from Miller's collection. Notable pieces include "Far Out" (2022), which marks Miller's first diptych in the series, where oversized characters compete for attention across two separate panels. Another highlight is "XXX" (2025), a work that captures both the graphic qualities of the letter form and its cultural associations with punk music and adult cinema.
The billboard-like scale that characterizes these works reflects Miller's years of living in Los Angeles, where he absorbed the visual language of American advertising and street art. The museum notes that this monumental approach to scale is a defining feature of Miller's artistic vision. The accompanying works on paper serve a different purpose, allowing visitors to explore the compositional planning and creative process that underlies the large paintings, offering an intimate view of the interplay between form, color, and typographic structure.
Miller's artistic journey with typography began during his academic studies when he was pursuing an A-Level in the History of Lettering. It was during this period that he discovered the captivating beauty of medieval manuscripts, where monks devoted countless hours to creating highly decorative letters that served as chapter headings. His Letter Paintings series draws inspiration from this ancient tradition, successfully merging the aesthetic principles of illuminated manuscripts with the bold, commercial aesthetics of Pop Art.
The exhibition "Harland Miller at the Design Museum" will open on December 10, 2025, and continue through January 25, 2026. Admission to the exhibition is completely free, making Miller's innovative typographic art accessible to all visitors during the museum's regular operating hours.
