Park Seo-Bo, born in 1931, stands as a pivotal figure in Korean contemporary art. As one of the founding members of the Dan-saekhwa movement, which emerged in post-war Korea during the early 1970s, Park's artistic legacy has earned global recognition. His renowned 'Ecriture' series, initiated in the late 1960s, involves the repetition of pencil lines on wet monochromatic painted surfaces. This series evolved over time, incorporating traditional Korean hanji paper and various colors. The creation process is marked by repetitive actions such as pasting, scraping, scratching, and rubbing, striking a delicate balance between drawing and painting in pursuit of emptiness through reduction. Park Seo-Bo's work has graced the walls of prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Langen Foundation in Neuss, the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, and the Venice Biennale, to name just a few. His art is also held in esteemed collections such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the M+ Museum.

Chung Chang-Sup
(1927-2011), a trailblazing figure in the first generation of post-war Korean contemporary art, dedicated himself to exploring the beauty and identity of Korean art through abstractness and the use of hanji paper. Transitioning from the 'Informel' movement to the 'Monochrome' movement, Chung consistently integrated hanji paper into his artistic process. His artwork echoes Korean tradition while carving out a unique artistic territory. Chung's compositions, characterized by shapeless frames and hues of yellow, black, and adzuki bean gruel, evoke a profound sense of timelessness, enveloping viewers in silence and captivation. His signature mulberry paper works, developed over decades, are showcased in reputable institutions worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Lee Bae
, born in 1956, divides his artistic focus between Seoul and Paris, exploring the expressive potential of charcoal as a medium. Over nearly three decades, Lee has immersed himself in creating diverse iterations of Korean painting using charcoal, imbuing his work with spiritual and energetic qualities. His art delves into immanent notions like yielding, respiring, and circulation inherent in charcoal as a material, touching on themes of life and death, presence and absence, light and shadow, form, and emptiness. Lee's versatile body of work encompasses drawings, canvas-based pieces, and installations, each contributing to his distinctive artistic vision. His art has been exhibited in renowned institutions worldwide, including the Phi Foundation in Montreal, Wilmotte Foundation in Venice, and Musée Guimet in Paris. Lee Bae's creations have found permanent homes in prestigious museum collections around the globe.

Johyun Gallery's journey began in 1989 when it established its first space in Gwanganli, Busan, under the name Gallery World. In 2007, the gallery underwent a transformation, relocating to Dalmaji Hill near Haeundae Beach, a picturesque location overlooking the Busan ocean. This move aimed to shape the neighborhood into an art hub. Simultaneously, JOHYUN Gallery expanded its presence to Chungdamdong, Seoul, in 2007, with a commitment to introducing and exhibiting a diverse array of artworks.

In summary, JOHYUN Gallery's participation in 'FRIEZE MASTER 2023' promises to be a celebration of Korean contemporary art, featuring works by luminaries like Park Seo-Bo, Chung Chang-Sup, and Lee Bae. With a rich history of artistic innovation and a commitment to showcasing diverse talents, JOHYUN Gallery continues to play a vital role in the global art scene.
