Sasha Gordon, a painter celebrated for her surreal depictions of herself in imaginative scenarios, has signed with David Zwirner, one of the world's leading galleries. At 26, she is the youngest artist currently represented by the gallery and among the youngest in the industry. Under her agreement with David Zwirner, Gordon will continue her representation with Matthew Brown, the trendy gallery in Los Angeles and New York that hosted her first solo exhibition in 2021.
Gordon's artwork is deeply influenced by her experiences as a biracial Asian woman. In a 2021 interview with Art in America, she expressed feeling the pressure to conform to specific stereotypes associated with being an Asian woman and a queer person, reflecting the anxieties tied to those identities in her work. Some of her pieces actively challenge stereotypes about Asian women, while others embrace whimsical, humorous fantasy scenarios.

Based in New York, Gordon's career has quickly gained momentum, highlighted by her participation in the 2022 group show "Wonder Women" at Jeffrey Deitch, which showcased various Asian American and diasporic women and nonbinary artists. She also held a solo exhibition at the gallery during that time. Last year, she exhibited solo shows at Stephen Friedman Gallery and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami. Currently, her work is featured in a Jewish Museum exhibition exploring how figurative painters navigate their identities through art.
"I saw Sasha Gordon’s work for the first time late last year at the ICA in Miami and was blown away by the power of those paintings," said David Zwirner in a statement. "I felt I was witnessing an artist of our time, a fresh voice pushing the genre into new territory. I’m excited for our first show together next year and thrilled to collaborate with Matthew Brown, one of the most talented gallerists of his generation."
David Zwirner will showcase Gordon’s work at Frieze London next month, followed by a solo exhibition in New York next September. This marks the second time in the past year that David Zwirner has signed a notably young artist, raising the standard for his roster. In February, the gallery welcomed Emma McIntyre, who was 33 at the time, also under a co-representation agreement with Los Angeles’s Chateau Shatto.
