A stunning new residential project has emerged from the lush forests of San Simón el Alto, Mexico, redefining the concept of family retreats in natural settings. Located just 2.5 hours from Mexico City, the House in the Forest represents a collaborative effort between Vasconcelos Arquitectura and Espacio Tangible, completed in 2025 and captured through the lens of photographers Fabian Martinez and Camila Cossio.
The impressive project sits on a sprawling 10,000 square meter plot surrounded by towering trees that reach heights of 30 meters. The architectural design team, led by Andrés Vasconcelos and including María Rubio, Tania Arenillas, Jorge Burgos, Fatima Mattar, Elizabeth Merino, Claudia Retana, and Ana Karen Torres, has created a modern reinterpretation of the traditional cabin concept. The project specifically aims to help families disconnect from urban routines while fostering deep connections with both the natural environment and family members.
The design philosophy centers on harmonious integration with the existing forest ecosystem, respecting the mature trees and natural topography of the site. Rather than imposing upon the landscape, the structure works symbiotically with its surroundings, creating spaces that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior environments. This approach reflects a growing trend in contemporary Mexican architecture toward sustainable and environmentally conscious design practices.
The landscape design was carefully crafted by Taller de Paisaje Entorno, ensuring that the house's integration with its natural setting extends beyond the building itself to encompass the entire property. This holistic approach to site planning demonstrates the project team's commitment to preserving and enhancing the existing ecological characteristics while providing modern amenities and comfortable living spaces for the family.
The project represents more than just architectural innovation; it embodies a lifestyle philosophy that prioritizes connection with nature and family bonding. By creating a retreat that encourages disconnection from digital distractions and urban stressors, the House in the Forest serves as a model for how contemporary residential architecture can support wellbeing and strengthen family relationships in our increasingly connected world.
