The Fox Talbot Museum of the National Trust in Lacock, United Kingdom, is set to present "Unseen Colour," a groundbreaking exhibition showcasing the previously unknown color photography work of renowned Swiss photographer Werner Bischof (1916-1954). The exhibition, organized by the Werner Bischof Estate, will run from May 31, 2025, through May 31, 2026, marking the UK premiere of this remarkable collection.

Bischof, celebrated as one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century and a distinguished member of the prestigious Magnum Photos cooperative, is primarily known for his iconic black-and-white imagery. However, this exhibition reveals a lesser-known aspect of his artistic vision through his pioneering work in color photography. As early as 1939, Bischof began experimenting with the innovative DEVIN Tricolor one-shot camera, using it for studio work, advertising campaigns, and fashion photography before later applying the technology to his comprehensive documentation of post-war Europe between 1945 and 1949.

Despite originally aspiring to become a painter, Bischof chose to pursue photography training at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich. His artistic background profoundly influenced his photographic approach, as he would often sketch scenes before capturing them with his camera, treating photography as a form of visual art. This painter's sensibility is particularly evident in his color work, which, though long overshadowed by his celebrated black-and-white legacy, demonstrates his sophisticated understanding of color composition and artistic vision.

Andy Cochrane, curator of the Fox Talbot Museum, emphasized the significance of hosting this exhibition at the historic venue. "It's perfect that the UK premiere of Werner Bischof's Unseen Colour is at the Fox Talbot Museum in Lacock," Cochrane stated. "Henry Fox Talbot developed photography here because he couldn't paint or draw. Constance Talbot—one of the world's earliest women photographers—preferred painting over photography. Bischof's exhibition brings together the artistic ambitions of both Henry and Constance Talbot in a truly meaningful way."

The exhibition has been made possible through the generous support of MASI Lugano and the Fotostiftung Schweiz, who provided crucial assistance in the restoration and presentation of Bischof's color work. The Werner Bischof Estate has also collaborated with Magnum Photos to bring this significant collection to public attention. Visitors can find more information about the exhibition and Bischof's work at www.wernerbischof.com, while the Fox Talbot Museum is located at Lacock, Chippenham SN15 2LG, United Kingdom.
