A striking new sculpture created by internationally acclaimed artist Anne Duk Hee Jordan will be unveiled this weekend as the centerpiece of a new water feature at Haigh Woodland Park in Wigan. The unique public artwork, titled 'Snail on Me,' represents a significant addition to the ongoing $50 million transformation of the historic park and will remain on display for at least five years.

The eye-catching steel sculpture, which combines elements of mythological and real creatures, will be positioned at the center of a newly constructed pond within the walled gardens adjacent to the historic Haigh Hall. Created by German-Korean artist Jordan, the installation is designed to explore critical contemporary themes including biodiversity and climate change. The sculpture serves as part of Jordan's larger 'Bodies of Water' project, marking the first in a planned series of public art commissions for the Haigh Hall grounds.

Councilor Chris Ready, Wigan Council's cabinet portfolio holder for communities and neighborhoods, expressed enthusiasm about the addition. 'It's an exciting time at Haigh Hall and the entire woodland park with many projects linked to the overall transformation now gathering pace,' Ready stated. 'This public artwork is an exciting addition to our development of the walled gardens and we're delighted that such a prestigious piece will be hosted at Haigh.'

The sculpture installation is part of the comprehensive redevelopment of Haigh Hall and its surrounding woodland park. The Grade II-listed hall is currently undergoing a major renovation and will feature an art gallery, children's education area, event space for weddings and parties, rooftop terrace, restaurant, bar, and additional amenities when it reopens in 2028. This ambitious project represents one of the most significant cultural investments in the region.

Beyond its artistic value, the new water feature serves important environmental functions. The pond will collect and filter rainwater while creating new habitats to encourage local biodiversity. This dual purpose aligns with the installation's thematic focus on environmental awareness and sustainability. Additionally, the project will include a series of community events and activities that explore similar themes, hosted by local artists to engage the broader community.

'Bodies of Water' is commissioned and curated by UP Projects, working in partnership with the National Trust and Wigan Council. The project receives funding from Arts Council England and Art Fund, with additional support from the Goethe-Institut and engineering expertise provided by Civic Engineers. This collaboration demonstrates the international scope and professional caliber of the installation.

The official unveiling ceremony will take place from noon to 4 PM on Saturday, featuring free family workshops including clay-making activities and rain dance tutorials. Families interested in participating can book these workshops through Eventbrite. The weekend event promises to celebrate both the artistic achievement and the community spirit that the installation represents, marking a milestone in Haigh Woodland Park's transformation into a premier cultural destination.
