Sargent's parents are Americans, but he was born in Florence and spent most of his life in Europe.
"Wineglasses" is a painting Sargent painted when he was only nineteen. The canvas is dated 1874, but it was probably painted in 1875 while Sargent was summering in Saint-Tenoga, Brittany.

He was interested in the effect of light falling on various materials. He depicted sunlight partially illuminating the floor and tablecloths reflecting ambient light and color, casting mottled shadows. His attention to the effects of light and his fluid brush strokes, where he paints directly onto the canvas after soaking in paint, show the influence of Impressionism.
