French multimedia artist Josèfa Ntjam is opening a groundbreaking new solo exhibition at Fotografiska in Tallinn this November, offering visitors an immersive multilayered sensory journey. The exhibition, titled "Futuristic Ancestry: Warping Matter and Space-time(s)," promises to take audiences through a fluid and poetic presentation filled with hybrid forms, diverse media, and endless dialogues that explore possible futures.
Opening on November 7, Ntjam's comprehensive exhibition brings together an impressive collection of sculptures, video installations, and photomontages. Her artistic practice draws deeply from the rich history and mythologies of the African diaspora, weaving together narratives of independence movements and anti-colonial and liberatory ideas. The exhibition invites visitors to explore stories of historical movements that have empowered the oppressed throughout time.
Ntjam's work is characterized by its unique approach to intertwining historical events and narratives, revealing how depictions of resistance and liberation evolve over time and continuously shift in meaning. Her art creates a dialogue between past and future, examining how historical struggles for freedom continue to resonate in contemporary contexts. The exhibition showcases her ability to blend different artistic mediums to create powerful commentary on social and political themes.
"Ntjam's exhibition offers both a visual and intellectual experience," said Maarja Loorents, co-founder and head of exhibitions at Fotografiska Tallinn. "It brings together history, art, science, and imagination in a way that feels deeply resonant, prompting us to ask: Who does history belong to, and which stories do we choose to remember?" This thought-provoking approach challenges visitors to reconsider traditional narratives and examine whose voices have been included or excluded from historical records.
The artist will personally attend the exhibition's opening tour on Thursday, November 6 at 6 p.m., providing visitors with the opportunity to engage directly with Ntjam and gain deeper insights into her artistic vision and creative process. This special event will allow attendees to hear firsthand about the concepts and inspirations behind the exhibition's powerful works.
The exhibition will remain on display at Fotografiska until spring 2026, giving visitors an extended opportunity to experience Ntjam's transformative art. Alongside Ntjam's exhibition, Fotografiska Tallinn is also presenting the large-scale group show "SPACE – A Visual Journey" and photographer Emilia Bergmark-Jiménez's powerful and intimate exhibition "To Be Born and to Give Birth," creating a rich cultural experience for art enthusiasts visiting the venue.
