RM, the leader of global superstar group BTS, made history on Wednesday as the first K-pop artist to deliver a keynote speech at the APEC CEO Summit, addressing world leaders about the importance of cultural diversity and calling for increased financial support for the arts. The 31-year-old artist, whose real name is Kim Nam-joon, spoke at the Gyeongju Arts Center in North Gyeongsang Province during the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit.

Speaking entirely in English, RM emphasized that K-pop's global success stems from its embrace of diversity while maintaining Korea's unique cultural identity. "K-pop is not just a genre of music. It is a 360-degree, total package of music, dance, performance, visual style, storytelling, music video and even social media," he told the assembled leaders. "K-pop's success came from respecting diversity and embracing world cultures but still holding onto Korea's unique identity."

To illustrate his point, RM drew a creative comparison between K-pop and bibimbap, a traditional Korean dish that combines rice with various vegetables, meat, and seasonings. "We take Korea's unique aesthetics, notions and production system, but we don't turn away elements of Western music like hip-hop, R&B or EDM. Just like bibimbap, these parts all keep their unique identities but mix together to make something new and fresh and delightful," he explained.

The BTS leader used his platform to advocate for greater financial support for artists and cultural initiatives from both political and business leaders. "Culture is like a river. It flows freely, different strains sometimes coming together in harmony just like K-pop," he said. "When you think about investing in tomorrow's generations, think about culture as well as economics. Culture and art are a powerful force that moves hearts. They are the fastest messengers that carry diversity and resonance."

RM's presentation, titled "Cultural and Creative Industries in the APEC Region and the Soft Power of K-culture," was delivered on the second day of the summit as part of its cultural session. His address represents a significant milestone, showcasing K-pop's global influence and the growing international recognition of Korean culture. "As the leaders of APEC, your policies and support will be the canvas and playground for all creators," he urged the audience.

The APEC CEO Summit serves as a business forum that runs alongside the annual APEC leaders summit, bringing together leaders from 21 member economies and top industry figures to discuss innovative industries and emerging global economic trends. This year's three-day summit in Gyeongju is hosted by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and runs through Friday under the official theme "Bridge, Business, Beyond." The event expects attendance from leaders representing 16 of the 21 APEC member economies and approximately 1,700 global CEOs.

Hybe, the parent company of BTS's agency BigHit Music, has taken a prominent role in the summit as the only entertainment company among the official sponsors. The entertainment giant is participating as a diamond sponsor, representing the summit's highest sponsorship tier. Hybe has established a promotional booth at the Gyeongju Arts Center to showcase its extensive global business network spanning the United States, Japan, China, Latin America, and India, while highlighting the achievements of artists under its multi-label system. Hybe Chairman Bang Si-hyuk was also present at the summit's opening ceremony, appearing alongside RM at the company's promotional booth.
