Korean Contemporary Music Collective Rito to Perform at Korean Cultural Center

Sayart / Sep 15, 2025

The Korean Cultural Center will host a special performance by Rito, a contemporary music collective that seamlessly blends Korean traditional melodies with electronic soundscapes, on Wednesday, August 10, 2025, at 8:00 PM. The event is part of the "KCC On Stage 2025" series, which showcases ten diverse Korean performing arts productions throughout the year.

Rito represents a unique artistic vision that bridges the gap between Korea's rich musical heritage and modern electronic music. The collective draws its inspiration from "Tori," the melodic essence that forms the foundation of Korean traditional music, creating what they describe as "new musical rituals." Their performances feature an innovative combination of piri (traditional Korean double reed instrument), traditional percussion instruments, and cutting-edge electronic music technology.

The ensemble consists of three core members who bring diverse expertise to their collaborative sound. Edith serves as the group's synthesizer specialist, crafting the electronic elements that complement the traditional instruments. Kang San Lee provides the rhythmic foundation through percussion, while Seayool Kim demonstrates versatility by performing both piri and percussion. For this special performance, the group will be joined by guest choreographer Hyaejin Lee, who will add a visual dimension to selected pieces.

The evening's program features nine distinct compositions, each offering a different exploration of Rito's artistic philosophy. The performance opens with "Jin," described as the doorway into Rito's world that invites audiences into a transformed sense of time and space. "Ja" follows with repeating piri melodies that build tension through quick, rhythmic breathing patterns. "Yuk" creates unity through pounding beats designed to bring the audience together as one collective experience.

The middle section of the program includes "Ta," a playful and dance-oriented piece that will feature choreographer Hyaejin Lee, bringing joy and movement to the stage. This transitions into "Jin2," also featuring Lee's choreography, which represents the slowest breath and creates a spacious, contemplative atmosphere. "Mu" breaks traditional boundaries, allowing sound to follow the natural flow of the moment without predetermined structure.

The performance builds toward its conclusion with "Cheong," which begins gently before rising into a full ritual experience. "Bul" offers deep resonance that is simultaneously quiet and powerful, creating an introspective moment. The evening culminates with "Hwi," described as a storming finale where energy bursts forth, and concludes with "Ro," which presents impressions from a city of layered time where tradition and electronics meet to shape a new musical landscape.

Admission to the performance is free, though reservations are required due to limited seating capacity. The Korean Cultural Center will open reservations on September 9th at 2:00 PM through their official website. This event represents part of the center's ongoing commitment to presenting contemporary Korean artists who are reimagining traditional cultural forms for modern audiences, demonstrating how ancient musical traditions can evolve and remain relevant in today's global cultural landscape.
