In a groundbreaking architectural achievement, global design firm Populous has unveiled an innovative environmental solution at Strasbourg's Stade de la Meinau, repurposing sections of decommissioned Airbus A340 fuselages to create the facade of the stadium's new south stand. This world-first project in sustainable architecture transforms aviation waste into a sophisticated sun-shading system that creates a shimmering effect across the 4,050-square-meter surface of the stand.
The ambitious renovation project, located in Strasbourg's La Meinau district, features an 11,712-seat South Stand designed by Populous in collaboration with local architect Rey-de-Crécy. The innovative design incorporates fuselage panels sourced from 30 retired aircraft, which are carefully cut and adapted into 196 individual aluminum segments. These segments are arranged as a continuous brise-soleil system that effectively tempers sunlight while giving the structure its distinctive shimmering exterior skin.
The newly completed south stand has been operational since September 2025, already hosting Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace matches while the rest of the stadium continues its phased transformation. François Clément, President of Populous France, explained the project's origins: "The idea for the facade sunshade was originally conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic, when planes were almost entirely grounded and airlines resized their fleet and flight operations. Our design concept sought to make use of decommissioned aircraft, using upcycled architecture to deliver the innovative concept at the heart of an environmentally sustainable design for the revamped stadium."
This pioneering approach aligns perfectly with Strasbourg's broader environmental and urban development goals. Pia Imbs, President of the Eurométropole of Strasbourg, emphasized the project's significance: "Faced with the challenges of climate change, we must develop a circular economy that respects the resources at our disposal. The reuse of the fuselages was decisive in our choice of project—it is a world first of which we are proud; it is the signature of the new face of the stadium."
The south stand features impressive amenities, including a glass-fronted five-story atrium equipped with bars, lounges, and two open party decks that provide spectacular views overlooking the pitch. The French team at Populous has designed these spaces to enhance the fan experience while maintaining the sustainable principles that define the project.
When the complete renovation reaches its expected completion date of August 2026, Stade de la Meinau will have expanded its capacity from 26,000 to 32,000 seats. The comprehensive redevelopment plan includes future phases that will transform the north, east, and west stands. Additionally, the project will introduce a public fan zone—another first for a French stadium—designed for community use throughout the week, extending the venue's impact beyond match days.
The project represents a collaboration between multiple stakeholders, including the Eurométropole of Strasbourg, Ville de Strasbourg, Région Grand Est, Collectivité Européenne d'Alsace, and Racing Club Strasbourg Alsace. This innovative approach to stadium design demonstrates how creative architectural solutions can address environmental challenges while creating functional, beautiful spaces that serve both sporting and community needs.
