HATCH Architects has successfully completed the renovation of the Changzhou Tian An Clubhouse, transforming a decade-old community facility into a contemporary space that harmoniously bridges Oriental philosophy with modern comfort. The 4,000-square-meter project, completed in 2025, represents a comprehensive architectural renewal that responds to the evolving lifestyle needs of the surrounding villa community residents.
Located on the scenic West Tai Lake in Changzhou, China, the clubhouse originally served the local residential enclave for over ten years before requiring significant updates. The architectural firm was commissioned to redesign the facility with a design language that would revive the sense of harmony between nature and spatial order, creating a unified setting for daily community life.
The renovation strategy focused on reconstructing both order and light throughout the integrated renewal of architecture, interiors, and landscape elements. The design team, led by David Wei and including specialists Zhao Danjing, Lu Huiqin, Wu Jiechen, Song Zhizhen, and numerous other contributors, established a restrained sloping roof that defines the entrance and creates a quiet ritual of return for residents.
Positioned at the heart of the residential community and surrounded by water and greenery, the clubhouse features stone and timber lattice surfaces that interweave to express the subtlety and reserve characteristic of traditional Eastern architecture. Upon entering, visitors encounter a dramatic spatial volume that unfolds beneath a layered timber ceiling whose radiating geometry draws inspiration from the ancient "ZAO JING" - a traditional caisson structure that organizes light through geometric patterns.
The interior design showcases sophisticated use of natural daylight, which filters through strategically placed skylights and passes between wooden grids and seams. This creates a slow-moving choreography of shadows across the floor, forming what the architects describe as the spiritual core of the space. The curved lattice structure extends downward, merging seamlessly with a monolithic stone bar and a stepped reading zone, achieving an elegant dialogue between structural elements and functional requirements.
Advanced parametric modeling and precision prefabrication techniques were employed to ensure both structural accuracy and the proper rhythm of light throughout the space. Beyond the central hall, deep overhangs and transparent façades create strong visual connections between indoor and outdoor scenes, allowing the surrounding greenery to become an integral part of the interior experience.
The renovated facility now houses multiple functional areas including a modern gym, swimming pool, all-day dining area, and private meeting rooms, all designed to maintain visual continuity with the natural environment. This careful balance achieves both practical everyday use and a resort-like atmosphere for relaxation and community gatherings.
The project utilized high-quality materials and products from renowned manufacturers including Daron Ceramics, Duravit, and Nippon Paint, ensuring both durability and aesthetic excellence. The collaboration involved Jiangsu Qi An Construction Group Co., Ltd. for construction, ONE HOUSE DESIGN for furniture and fixtures, and Jiangsu Zhuyuan Build Design Co., Ltd. for local design implementation.
Through its masterful use of light as a medium, the renewed Tian An Clubhouse successfully reinterprets the spatial order of Oriental architecture while maintaining a calm, enduring, and quietly contemporary character. The project stands as an exemplary model of how traditional Eastern architectural principles can be thoughtfully integrated with modern design approaches to create spaces that serve contemporary community needs while honoring cultural heritage.
