The Jeddah Culture Square, designed by Urko Sanchez Architects, stands as a transformative cultural landmark at the heart of the Historic Jeddah Waterfront Regeneration Initiative. Spanning 28,000 square meters and completed in 2025, this ambitious project represents a bold statement of renewal where memory, art, and urban transformation converge in one of Saudi Arabia's most significant architectural undertakings.
Located at the northern edge of Al Arbaeen Lagoon and facing Al-Balad, Jeddah's storied historic district, the Culture Square forms an integral part of a larger vision to transform the lagoon's perimeter into a sustainable, mixed-use urban hub. The project reimagines the relationship between Jeddah's rich historical heritage and its contemporary urban development, creating a dynamic intersection that honors the past while embracing the future.
Lead architect Marwan Zouein spearheaded the design team, which included Estrella de Andrés, Alfredo Entrala, Eloy Fernanz, Carmen Gamboa, Malena Martus, Victor Mascato, Manuel Merino, Borja Pérez, Pilar Riesco, Fernando Rodriguez, and Guillermo Palenzuela. The collaborative effort brought together diverse expertise to create a cohesive vision that addresses the complex challenges of integrating modern cultural infrastructure within a historically sensitive context.
The project's construction was managed by MIDRAR, with Freyssinet Saudi handling the technical construction aspects. The architectural vision was enhanced through specialized consultancies, including lighting design by Elbaz & Gil de Montes, which created dramatic illumination schemes that highlight the structure's architectural features while respecting the surrounding historic environment. Interior design was entrusted to Nada Debs Studio, known for their sophisticated approach to contemporary Middle Eastern aesthetics.
Landscape architecture played a crucial role in the project's success, with Walk Architects, led by Juan Tur, developing comprehensive outdoor spaces that seamlessly integrate with the built environment. The landscape design creates flowing connections between the Culture Square and its surroundings, establishing visual and physical links to both the historic district and the waterfront. Acoustic considerations were addressed by TMA, ensuring optimal sound quality for cultural events and performances.
The Culture Square's architectural language reflects a careful balance between contemporary design principles and respect for local architectural traditions.
