The Korean Cultural Centre Canada celebrated the opening of "The Drawings of Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Artisans" on October 23, 2025, marking a significant cultural event that brings together traditional Korean craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression. The exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Seoul Museum of Craft Art, offers visitors a rare glimpse into the intricate world of najeon lacquerware through the artistic blueprints that guide master craftsmen in creating these stunning works.
Focusing on the theme "Mother-of-Pearl through Drawings," the exhibition highlights najeon designs, which serve as detailed blueprints for the complex patterns created through the meticulous process of cutting and inlaying pieces of shell. These drawings represent the foundational stage of Korean mother-of-pearl lacquerware creation, revealing the artistic planning and precision that goes into each masterpiece. The exhibition demonstrates how these preliminary sketches capture both the technical requirements and aesthetic vision necessary for producing Korea's renowned decorative art form.
The comprehensive display features more than 100 works, creating an extensive survey of this specialized art form across different periods. The collection brings together rare historical designs and masterpieces created by distinguished master artisans of the modern era, alongside innovative new creations by contemporary artists. This unique combination offers visitors a perspective on both the enduring traditional techniques and the ongoing evolution of Korean mother-of-pearl lacquerware artistry.
The exhibition showcases works by twelve notable artists, including established masters and contemporary practitioners: JEON Seong-gyu, KIM Bong-ryong, SONG Joo-an, SHIM Bu-gil, MIN Jong-tae, KIM Tae-hee, KIM Sung-soo, SONG Bang-ung, LEE Hyeong-man, SOHN Dae-hyeon, CHOI Sang-hoon, and KIM Seol.
