Two UK-based activist groups organized a demonstration outside the White Cube Gallery in London to protest a controversial fireworks display exhibition by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang. The protest drew attention to ongoing debates surrounding the artist's work and its cultural implications.

The demonstration was led by local organizations who gathered outside the prestigious gallery to voice their concerns about the exhibition. The protest highlighted the polarizing nature of Cai Guo-Qiang's artistic practice, which often involves large-scale pyrotechnic installations and performances that have sparked both acclaim and controversy throughout his international career.

White Cube Gallery, one of London's most influential contemporary art spaces, has been making significant changes to its operations and roster recently. The gallery recently appointed Jessie Washburne-Harris as its new Global Director in New York, bringing her extensive experience from her previous role as senior vice president at Pace Gallery to the position.

The controversy surrounding Cai Guo-Qiang's exhibition comes amid a period of transformation for White Cube Gallery. Earlier this year, the gallery made headlines when it dismissed nearly 40 security monitors and replaced them with traditional security guards, a move that affected workers described as part of a broader trend impacting galleries across the industry.

White Cube has been actively expanding its global presence and artist representation, recently adding several prominent artists to its roster including pioneering artist and curator Howardena Pindell for European and Asian representation, while she continues her partnership with Garth Greenan Gallery in the United States. The gallery has also strengthened its contemporary program by representing Richard Hunt, the totemic American sculptor of the 20th century, and will host a solo exhibition of his work at its Madison Avenue location.

The gallery's growth strategy includes significant geographical expansion, with plans to open a new space in Seoul this fall, marking another milestone in White Cube's international development. The London-based gallery has also welcomed taste-making New York dealer Sukanya Rajaratnam to its team, further strengthening its presence in the American art market.
