Open House Tasmania is making its highly anticipated return this November, offering visitors unprecedented access to the island's most celebrated architectural achievements and historic properties across two separate weekends. For the first time in the event's history, the program will expand beyond Hobart's award-winning contemporary homes to include a remarkable collection of historic buildings throughout the Southern Midlands region.

The inaugural Southern Midlands component will take place on November 1-2, featuring more than 40 exceptional buildings in and around the townships of Oatlands, Dysart, and Kempton. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to explore an impressive array of architectural styles and historical periods, ranging from iconic converted churches to beautifully preserved colonial homesteads and cottages. Notable properties on the tour include Oatlands 101, Petit Chateau, Raffah House, Lonsdale, and Glebe House, each representing different chapters in Tasmania's rich architectural heritage. Adding contemporary flair to the historic lineup, the program also features a distinctive 1970s artist's retreat nestled in the scenic hills of Mangalore.

The following weekend, November 8-9, will spotlight Hobart's modern architectural excellence with several returning favorites that have captivated visitors in previous years. The Hobart program includes the acclaimed Hampden Road House designed by Archier, The Boathouse by Maguire & Devine Architects, Blue Magnolia by Biotope Architecture and Interiors, and Fusiliers Cottage by Bence Mulcahy. Organizers have indicated that additional properties will be announced as the event date approaches, promising an even more comprehensive showcase of the city's architectural innovation.

According to Open House Hobart co-producer Jennifer Nichols, the event goes far beyond simply providing access to remarkable buildings. "More than just opening buildings, Open House will tell the stories of those who lived, worked and played in these spaces and places, and how they continue to tell the stories of the current custodians," Nichols explained. This narrative approach emphasizes the human connections that give these architectural spaces their deeper meaning and cultural significance.

The complete program details for both Open House Southern Midlands and Open House Hobart will be officially released on Monday, October 6, which coincides with World Architecture Day. Based on the impressive lineup already announced, this year's expanded program promises to be an unmissable celebration of Tasmania's diverse architectural landscape, spanning centuries of design evolution from colonial heritage to cutting-edge contemporary construction.
