A groundbreaking nursing home facility has opened in Sindal, Northern Jutland, Denmark, setting new standards for dementia care architecture. The Soldalhus Nursing Home, also known as Sunvalley House, was designed by Cubo Arkitekter and completed in 2024, featuring 96 dementia-friendly residences across a 9,800 square meter complex that prioritizes human dignity, independence, and community connection.
The facility's name, Soldalhus, translates directly to "Sunvalley House," reflecting the architectural design's emphasis on natural light, openness, and seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. The building includes a central community building along with extensive shared spaces and service areas, all designed with a clear focus on the wellbeing of residents, staff, and visitors.
Strategically positioned on the edge of Northern Jutland's characteristic hill formations, the nursing home creates a vital connection between the natural landscape and the nearby town of Sindal. This placement strengthens local urban life by establishing new pathways between the care center and the city, while offering residents panoramic views of meadows and wetlands that provide a calming environment for those with dementia.
The architects employed sophisticated environmental design strategies to create optimal living conditions throughout the year. Subtle terracing and careful reshaping of the terrain establish a sheltered microclimate that uses natural landforms and strategic planting to moderate the area's prevailing westerly winds. This approach ensures comfortable outdoor environments that residents can enjoy regardless of the season.
Cubo Arkitekter's design philosophy centers on creating spaces that maintain the dignity and independence of residents while fostering meaningful connections within the community. The facility represents a significant advancement in dementia care architecture, demonstrating how thoughtful design can enhance quality of life for vulnerable populations while supporting the broader community infrastructure.
The project was executed in collaboration with general contractor NCC, with structural engineering and consulting provided by NIRAS, and landscape architecture designed by Skaarup Landskab. Photography of the completed facility was captured by Martin Schubert, showcasing the building's integration with its natural surroundings and its innovative approach to healthcare facility design.
