A new French documentary film titled "The Secret of Velázquez" offers an intimate exploration of Spanish master Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, revealing how the 17th-century artist revolutionized human portraiture and influenced generations of painters. The film itself serves as a small work of art, taking viewers into the creative world of one of history's most exceptional artistic talents.

Diego Velázquez, who lived from 1599 to 1660, elevated the representation of humanity in art to unprecedented levels. While other Baroque artists focused on ornate and elaborate motifs, the Spanish maestro concentrated on shifting perspectives, striking contrasts, and unique lighting conditions. Many details in his works only become visible upon closer examination, revealing layers of meaning that continue to captivate viewers centuries later.

The documentary marks the directorial debut of Stéphane Sorlat, who previously worked as a producer on films including "Francisco de Goya: The Sleep of Reason." Sorlat creates a sublime puzzle by examining various works of the artistic genius in detail. As court painter to King Philip IV, Velázquez skillfully navigated relationships with the ruling class, portraying nobles both great and small in their finest attire. However, his creations also reveal a profound interest in society's outcasts – drinkers and people with dwarfism – whom he immortalized on canvas with remarkable empathy and sensitivity.

Anyone who posed for Velázquez, whether standing, sitting, or lying down, could expect many things from their portrait – but never a flattering representation. "Too true!" Pope Innocent X allegedly exclaimed upon viewing his own portrait, capturing the artist's commitment to honest rather than idealized depictions.

The film features commentary from numerous renowned contemporary artists, including Julian Schnabel and Isabel Coixet, who share their personal discoveries of Velázquez's work and express their deep admiration. Historical footage shows Salvador Dalí paying tribute to the man behind the famous painting "Las Meninas" (The Ladies-in-Waiting), which Dalí copied extensively throughout his career. French painter Édouard Manet is quoted with the declaration that gives the documentary its German title: "He is the painter of painters."

Accompanied by poetic commentary, nature scenes, and musical interludes, the hour-and-a-half film unfolds an entire universe before viewers. It successfully balances factual information with an emotional understanding of this surprisingly modern and influential artist. The documentary demonstrates how Velázquez's innovative techniques and humanistic approach continue to resonate with artists today.

Reportedly, 29 mirrors were found in Velázquez's residence after his death, suggesting his fascination with reflection and perspective. This cinematic reflection of his artistic legacy would likely have pleased the master himself, offering a fitting tribute to an artist whose influence on the art world remains immeasurable.
