A husband-and-wife artist team has opened a new art gallery in Collingwood, Ontario, exclusively showcasing Canadian artwork. Nōma Gallery, located on Huron Street, officially opened its doors on September 20, marking a significant milestone for local artists Ryan and Colleen Sobkovich.
Ryan Sobkovich brings extensive artistic experience to his new role as gallery owner. He has been painting since the age of nine, sold his first artwork at just 11 years old, and began exhibiting in galleries when he was 16. Now approaching 30, Sobkovich is transitioning from artist to gallerist, with his wife Colleen, also an artist, joining him in this entrepreneurial venture.
"I always wanted to own a gallery in my hometown," said Sobkovich, who grew up in Wasaga Beach and attended high school in Collingwood. The gallery currently represents 11 artists from across Canada, with plans to expand this roster in the future while maintaining their commitment to exclusively showcase Canadian talent.
What sets Nōma Gallery apart is Sobkovich's distinctive approach to presentation and customer service. "I wanted to do things differently," he explained. "I've decided to frame everything that comes through the doors. Nothing will go on the walls that's unframed." This decision reflects his belief in elevating the artwork's presentation quality. "It helps to set up the art on a different level and allows you to truly see the finished product," he said.
The gallery offers innovative client services designed to assist potential buyers in their decision-making process. "We offer a trial program so clients can take a piece of art home to see how it looks," Sobkovich explained. Additionally, the gallery provides digital visualization services, allowing customers to see how artwork would appear in their own spaces through digital superimposition technology.
Nōma Gallery welcomes visitors seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., providing ample opportunity for art enthusiasts and collectors to explore the diverse collection of Canadian artwork. The opening represents not only a new business venture for the Sobkovich couple but also a fresh platform for Canadian artists to showcase their work in the Collingwood community.
