The Korea Football Association (KFA) is set to deliberate on the status of men's national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann this week, following South Korea's semifinal exit at the Asian Cup 2023. Reports from local media outlets suggest that KFA executives have recommended requesting Klinsmann's resignation in their first meeting since the disappointing tournament.

Vice President Lee Seok-jae conveyed the meeting's outcomes to KFA President Chung Mong-gyu. Reports indicate that Chung emphasized the necessity for a justification in Klinsmann's removal.

Amidst public dissatisfaction over the team's sub-par performance, a civic group has filed a police complaint against KFA chief Chung for the alleged unilateral appointment of the head coach, citing interference with KFA business as a potential crime.

Politicians, including Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, have joined the chorus of voices demanding action from the KFA. Mayor Hong specifically called for the termination of Klinsmann's contract.

Klinsmann, a former German football star, is one of South Korea's high-profile head coaches. His termination poses financial challenges for the KFA, with a presumed buyout fee of around 7 billion won ($5.24 million). The coach's reported salary is approximately $2 million, with a contractual obligation for another two years and five months.

The budget for the South Korean soccer federation in 2023 reached an all-time high of 158.1 billion won ($118.2 million). The deliberations on Klinsmann's future come against the backdrop of financial considerations and widespread calls for change following the team's lackluster performance.
