Senior Photo Project 'Åhnlroas' Shows That 'You Can Sparkle at Any Age'

A groundbreaking photography project that celebrates seniors as glamorous models is continuing to make waves beyond its origins as a European Capital of Culture initiative. The project, called 'Åhnlroas,' features professional photo shoots with seniors over 65 years old and is currently displaying new portraits at Sisipark in Bad Ischl, Austria.

Photographer Catherine Ebser, who leads the innovative project, has gained recognition for her work empowering older adults through professional photography sessions. The project's impact was so significant that Ebser recently presented it at the Austrian Parliament in Vienna, as well as at an EU symposium in the Netherlands. One participant in the photo series shared the touching response from her granddaughter: 'Grandma, you look really glamorous!'

The 'Åhnlroas – Alt:Neu:Modisch' (Old:New:Fashionable) project allows participants to present themselves exactly as they wish to be seen. Ebser provides a high-quality wardrobe collection that is constantly being expanded, enabling the senior models to choose outfits that reflect their personal style and vision. The photographer works exclusively with people aged 65 and older, creating professional portraits that challenge conventional notions about aging and beauty.

According to Ebser, the portrait sessions have a profound psychological impact on participants. 'The seniors take a new sense of self-worth with them into their daily lives,' she explained. The project demonstrates that glamour and beauty are not limited by age, embodying the philosophy that 'you can sparkle at any age.'

The current exhibition at Sisipark features a particularly personal collection for Ebser. The new 'Åhnlroas' images showcase not only remarkable seniors but also 'people who have shaped me: teachers, companions, mentors, and old friends of my family,' the photographer revealed. The models participating in this series come from various Austrian regions, including Upper Austria, Vienna, and Salzburg.

The project's influence continues to expand internationally, with Ebser's presentations at European venues demonstrating growing interest in age-positive initiatives. Looking ahead, the next 'Åhnlroas' edition will involve collaborative work with a student group from HLW Bad Ischl, indicating the project's evolution to include intergenerational cooperation and educational components.
