Renowned director Choi Dong-hoon shares insights into the intricate process of creating the two-part film series "Alienoid." The second installment of the sci-fi fantasy saga is set to hit local theaters on January 10.
Choi faced the challenge of revisiting the editing room 50 times to achieve the perfect final cut for "Alienoid 2." The first part of the series, released in summer 2022, did not meet box office expectations, accumulating only 1.5 million viewers. Despite this setback, Choi sees "Alienoid" as a meaningful and transformative project, marking a unique attempt in Korean cinema.

Choi acknowledges the disappointment of the first part's performance at the box office, tarnishing his otherwise successful filmography, which includes hits like "The Thieves" (2012) and "Assassination" (2015). However, he expresses enthusiasm for the genre mix and the joy of collaborating with actors, stating that "Alienoid" holds a special place in his heart.
Despite suggestions that the unique setting and complex timeline of "Alienoid" would be suitable for a TV series, Choi explains that the extravagant visual effects were best experienced in a theater. Regarding the possibility of a third installment, Choi mentions brief discussions during the post-production of "Alienoid 2" but deems it premature to confirm.
The director concludes by emphasizing the profound impact the "Alienoid" project has had on him, highlighting the struggle and joy inherent in a director's destiny and expressing the fulfillment of working closely with actors.
