A groundbreaking architectural project in Rajkot, India, has emerged as a compelling study in balancing seemingly opposing forces in modern design. Plot 33, designed by Playball Studio, represents an innovative approach to integrating residential and professional spaces while addressing the complex dynamics between inside-outside relationships, work-life balance, privacy-openness, reused-new materials, and adaptability versus single-use functionality.
The 402-square-meter project, completed in 2023, serves as both a private residence and architecture studio, embodying the collaborative vision of architect duo Ronak Gangdev and Celia Fernandez Duque. Their diverse backgrounds—representing South Asia (India) and Southern Europe (Spain) respectively—have been thoughtfully amalgamated into this architectural statement within Rajkot's rapidly expanding urban landscape.
Strategically positioned on a 10 x 24-meter parcel of land, Plot 33 occupies a tight urban residential neighborhood adjacent to the region's university campus. The site's northern short side faces the road leading to the university, while the opposite side of the plot overlooks a small public park adorned with large sheltering trees across the road. This unique positioning influenced the design's relationship with both the academic community and natural elements.
The architectural design philosophy centers on achieving harmony between contrasting elements that typically challenge contemporary architects. The project demonstrates how residential and professional functions can coexist seamlessly, creating spaces that transition fluidly between private living areas and collaborative work environments. This dual functionality reflects the evolving nature of modern work practices, particularly relevant in the post-pandemic era where home-office integration has become increasingly important.
Playball Studio's approach to material selection further reinforces the project's commitment to balance, incorporating both reused and new materials throughout the structure. Additional expertise was provided by structural consultant Varun Suchak, while various contractors handled specialized aspects including carpentry by D N Furniture, elevator installation by Express India, HVAC systems by Shree Hari AirCon, and façade work by Wintech Glazing.
